It didn’t take long for us to catch a glimpse of the new Metal Slug. About a month and a half ago, SNK revealed that two new Metal Slug games were currently in development. One would be a mobile spin-off of sorts while a proper console/PC entry would also see the light of day. Yesterday at the annual Tencent Games conference, developer TiMi Studios showed off a trailer for Metal Slug Code: J, the mobile iteration of this classic run-n-gun series.

Ditching the classic 2D pixel art style, this new game bears a close resemblance to Metal Slug 3 in terms of set pieces and action moments. Apart from that, you could have fooled me into thinking this was the forthcoming console version. It looks way too good to be a mobile game.

Diehard fans might be a little upset at the switch to 3D graphics, but the art style here is on-point. It really doesn’t look that far removed from the goofy and hyper-animated style that Metal Slug is known for. The gameplay, as well, very closely resembles that of its predecessors. There’s some weird 3D hub world thing (that is probably home to microtransactions), but this genuinely seems pretty good.

In a statement given to the press, SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda said, “Metal Slug has such an amazing history of great action and gameplay so we’re proud to bring this to mobile gamers around the world. We’re happy to work closely with such a strong developer as TiMi Studios on this latest Metal Slug title.”

TiMi J1’s general manager Winco Qin concurred, saying, “Metal Slug is one of the great arcade franchises and a perfect fit for mobile play. Our team has been focused on a faithful recreation of the game’s classic shoot-em-up style, easily accessible for players that’s fun for new and existing fans of the genre”

Code: J is currently targeting Android and iOS devices, though I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a port to PC in the future. It seems like it would be pretty easy to translate what is already a pretty faithful recreation of classic Metal Slug to gamepads.
