Nintendo has dropped a demo for Metroid Dread in the eshop for Halloween, which means none of you have an excuse not to at least give it a try.

Metroid Dread launched earlier this month, ending a 19-year wait for the sequel to Metroid Fusion. It may have only been a few weeks, but Dread appears to be a hit and has lived up to its very lofty expectations. The game is breaking all sorts of series records and has been labeled by some as the best Metroid game ever.

Despite all that, there may well be some of you who are still on the fence when it comes to picking up a copy of Dread. Metroid might seem popular, but it is far from Nintendo’s best-known and most well-loved IP. There’s also plenty of talk out there about how tricky Dread is, something that is only magnified should it be played by someone who hasn’t encountered Metroid before.

$60 is a lot to spend on a game you might give up on shortly after you start playing it. Fear not, as Nintendo has now made a Dread demo available to celebrate Halloween. While there isn’t a definite time limit attached to the demo’s availability, that it has been added to the eshop to celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year suggests it will be around through this weekend at the very least.

It might seem a little odd that Nintendo would release a trailer for a game a few weeks after the full thing launched, but it actually makes sense. It could even be something it does with more games in the future should this work. Dread slipped out of the top three in the boxed chart for the first time last week, which likely means its download numbers have dropped too.

The sales Dread has registered thus far prove it has attracted plenty of new Metroid fans already. Not to mention the success of older Metroid games on Wii U and 3DS brought about by Dread’s success. There’s always room for more though, and releasing a demo right now could well bring in even more new Metroid fans, further convincing Nintendo to make more games in the series beyond Metroid Prime 4 which is already in development.
