Michael C. Hall reacts to the Harrison twist from Dexter: New Blood episode 4. The Emmy-nominated actor previously known for the HBO drama Six Feet Under starred in all 8 seasons of the Showtime series as everyone’s favorite serial murderer who only preys on other killers, Dexter Morgan. Now, Hall has returned to his career-defining role for a revival season subtitled New Blood, which is currently four episodes deep and airing Sunday nights.

Both Hall and original showrunner Clyde Phillips have returned in an attempt to redeem the show’s highly-controversial ending which saw Dexter fake his own death and move to Oregon to work as a lumberjack. New Blood is set a decade after the events of the original ending and finds Dexter residing in the idyllic snow-covered small town of Iron Lake, New York. There, he lives under the alias Jim Lindsay, works at a Fish & Game shop, and is dating the police chief, Angela Bishop (Julia Jones). During episode 1, Dexter also reunites with his long-lost son, Harrison, now played by Jack Alcott.

Now, Hall himself is reacting to the big reveal from episode 4, “H Is For Hero.” After he learns that Harrison prevented a shooting at school, Dexter examines the scene himself, using his blood spatter knowledge to discover that Harrison attacked the other student first and staged it to look like he was the hero. Talking to TVLine, Hall reacted to the big plot twist. Read what he had to say below:

I think that possibility is a part of the fun and the richness of that relationship. There are opposing things that are happening simultaneously for Dexter when it comes to Harrison and the dark passenger. On one hand, it’s Dexter’s deepest fear that his son has the dark passenger, and on the other hand it’s his deepest wish, which makes parenting tricky. As is always the case with Dexter, when presented with an either-or scenario — is it this, or is it that? — it’s usually both. He’s experiencing a sense of horror and a sense of relief, and a sense of a wish being fulfilled, and a sense of the forbidden. It’s all of these things.

The notion that Harrison could also carry Dexter’s dark passenger will certainly be momentous in terms of the remaining episodes. It will be especially interesting to see how Dexter reacts after finding Harrison’s straight razor that he used to cut the other student, echoing the Trinity Killer’s (John Lithgow) weapon of choice from season 4. Based on Dexter’s slight smile at the end of the episode, it appears he’s happy his son turned out just like him.

Dexter could try to help his son suppress his dark urges like he successfully did for the past 10 years with the help of his sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) as the nagging voice in his head, taking over for their deceased father, Harry (James Remar). On the other hand, Dexter could take his kin under his wing and teach him how to kill without getting caught, much like his own step-dad did for him. It’s certainly no surprise that Harrison also carries Dexter’s dark passenger. Like his father, Harrison was born in blood as a result of Trinity killing his mother, Rita (Julie Benz), and leaving him in a pool of her blood. How this directly affects the events of Dexter: New Blood remains to be seen.
