September is shaping up to be an incredibly busy month for Minecraft Dungeons fans, who will be treated to the Creeping Winter DLC alongside a free update that adds new merchants and a new gameplay mode called Daily Trials. Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon-crawler spin-off of the omnipresent Minecraft franchise, and has carved out a niche for itself among players thanks to its commitment to consistent updates and transparent content release plans.

While Minecraft Dungeons is the most recent spin-off of the franchise to find a home in a new genre, it’s not the first. Perhaps the best known is Minecraft: Story Mode, a narrative experience developed by Telltale Games that added more of a structured story to the world of Minecraft while maintaining the same level of charm that the original game has made its brand for the better part of a decade now. Minecraft Dungeons has been well-received critically, with more positive assessments coming the further it gets into its content release schedule thanks to some hefty additions that make the game more robust. Most recently, the game released the Jungle Awakens DLC, which added a sizeable amount of content.

The next Minecraft Dungeons DLC, Creeping Winter, will be doing more of the same, featuring new missions and enemies while adding equally new armor, weapons, and artifacts to the game. In a blog post on the main Minecraft website detailing Minecraft Dungeons plans for the upcoming month, it was also announced that a free game update is coming out on September 8 – the same day as the DLC. This free game update will add new Merchants in the Blacksmith, who can upgrade items, and the Gift Wrapper, who lets players trade with each other in multiplayer. Both of those Merchants can level up, and they have to be saved to get access to their services.

Perhaps the most exciting, if also the most vague, addition will be the Daily Trials, which also come with the Minecraft Dungeons September update. Daily Trials are described as challenges that update each day, and they will “make wild changes to the game mechanics” which in turn will create some of Minecraft Dungeons’ most difficult content to date. Also announced for September 8 is the physical release of the Minecraft Dungeons console variants.

Minecraft Dungeons continues to make strides in becoming a deeper dungeon crawler, and its ties to the Minecraft universe at large will help keep players invested as that happens. While the game is a bit more of a niche offering than traditional Minecraft, it’s certainly being treated like it’s every bit its equal in the early going, as frequent updates continue to give fans a reason to come back to Minecraft Dungeons.
