A Minecraft player decided to give the game’s infamous ghasts a more terrifying look by turning them into nightmarish creatures via a mod. This isn’t the first time the floating weepers of the Nether get a makeover, as one of the previous resource packs basically swapped the hostile mobs with innocent squids.

Resulting in a weird outcome that can never be unseen, one Minecraft player swapped ghasts’ and squids’ textures by using a simple resource pack. Since the creatures’ models differ slightly, the act of replacement did take some effort, but it was totally worth it. The unlikely sight of a squid-ghast was somehow even more terrifying and intimidating than the basic version of the mob. This was probably due to the fact that a squid’s texture has teeth on the bottom, which looks a lot scarier when observed on a giant Nether mob from below. Funnily enough, the next rework of ghasts doesn’t suffer from teeth shortage either, emphasizing the creature’s mouth area far more than common sense dictates.

As shared by Redditor SammyBlackheart, there’s a specific mod aimed at changing ghasts’ already frightening appearance into something even more monstrous. On the featured image, the notorious watchmen of Minecraft’s Nether were envisioned as disturbingly flesh-toned, eerily massive floating maws. As if the game’s hellish realm wasn’t scary enough, it can now effectively deprive of sleep even the most cold-blooded adventurers. On the Reddit thread, players have noticed the uncanny resemblance between the redesigned ghasts and Stephen King’s time-devouring Langoliers. Aptly named Gasps, the reworked mobs do make an impression of nightmare fuel. Some gamers, however, suggested putting the creatures against dentists or at least equipping ghasts with brackets for a more comical approach.

Despite their simplistic shapes, Minecraft’s unique hostile mobs can easily cause anxiety in players, especially if presented in a more intimidating way than the vanilla game offers. A dedicated builder decided to reimagine some of Minecraft’s most popular creatures as gigantic statues, and particular scenes of these mobs overhanging the environment were deeply disturbing. One of the rendered panoramas contained a duo of massively tall Endermen, with one of them shamelessly holding a whole chunk with a village church instead of a block of grass.

It’s funny how drastically a simple texture replacement can affect the perception of an already unsettling-looking Minecraft mob. But despite ghasts’ unpleasant nature, players have somehow formed a weird bond with these disturbing creatures over the years. Ghasts have almost become somewhat of Nether’s mascots that are being regularly treated to amazing fan art or various mods. Except for the most recent mod that has clearly overstepped the limits of acceptable creativity, resulting in the opposite of art.
