Mix Fold How Xiaomis First Foldable Phone Compares To Galaxy Z Fold 2

The Mi Mix Fold is Xiaomi’s first attempt at a foldable smartphone and it already comes with numerous record-breaking aspirations. The specs alone have the makings of a phone that’s capable of beating Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 in almost every department, but not without some compromises. Roughly one month ago, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 11, a flagship smartphone that compares well against Samsung’s Galaxy S21.

Now the company finally appears to also have an answer to the Galaxy Z Fold 2 as well, Samsung’s premium foldable smartphone which debuted late last year. Samsung’s latest attempt at a folding phone resulted in a handset that’s equipped with a reinforced hinge design, a larger display, and a greater capacity battery. Basically, Samsung improved on the the previous model in most of the ways that matter. The Galaxy Z Fold 2’s specs didn’t leave much room for the competition to match, but that might change with the arrival of Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold.

In a blog post, Xiaomi touted the Mix Fold’s various industry-leading feats, including a massive tablet-like display that’s regarded as the largest in the folding phone market. The Mi Mix Fold is also marketed as the first smartphone to utilize a quad-speaker setup, capable of increasing sound volume by up to 40-percent, along with support for 3D spatial audio playback. Furthermore, it also marks the debut of Xiaomi’s self-developed liquid lens camera, a technology that provides a single lens with the versatility of both micro and macro photographic functionality.

Mix Fold & Galaxy Z Fold 2 Comparison

Xiaomi smartphones are known for having top-rated displays and the Mix Fold is no exception. It sports a 6.5-inch AMOLED outside display and an even larger 8.01-inch OLED WQHD+ resolution unfolded screen, running at 60Hz refresh rate. Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2 comes with smaller 6.2-inch external and 7.6-inch internal AMOLED displays, but its main screen can run at a smoother 120 hertz. The Mix Fold is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 processor with 12 to 16 GB RAM, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 utilizes the more dated Snapdragon 865+ SoC along with 12 GB of RAM. Xiaomi’s first folding phone also comes with a greater 5,020 mAh battery capacity and lightning fast 67-watt turbo charging. In contrast, Samsung’s foldable entry features a 4,500 mAh capacity battery supported by 25-watt fast charging.

Cameras are also another area of difference as well. The Mi Mix Fold is equipped with a 108-megapixel main shooter, an 8-megapixel liquid lens and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens, along with a 20-megapixel selfie camera, while the Galaxy Z Fold 2 features a triple 12-megapixel camera setup with a 10-megapixel selfie camera. As for pricing, the Mi Mix Fold is considerably cheaper too, starting at 9,999 RMB, roughly $1,525 compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2 which starts at $1,999.

Perhaps the biggest compromise, as with most Xiaomi handsets, is in the Android 10-based MIUI 12 operating system, which might prove to offer a less reliable and secure experience compared to Samsung’s One UI along with the benefits of Samsung’s Knox security solution. Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still the safer choice, but the Mix Fold certainly offers the best value and especially when considering the limited competition within the foldable phone market.
