Mixed Reports Over Impressive Q1 2020 Nintendo Switch Sales

An initial report suggested Nintendo sold 4.2 million Switches in March of this year. On closer examination, it seems that really was too good to be true.

Nintendo’s most successful non-handheld console ever was the Wii, which sold more than 100 million units. However, the company failed to ride that wave of momentum into its next generation. Its follow-up console, the Wii U, sold less than 15 million units, Nintendo’s worst-selling console ever, not including the classic versions of the NES and SNES.

It needed to bounce back in a major way and has done so via the Switch. It’s now three years into the Switch’s lifespan, and the console has already sold three times as many units as the Wii U. It also shows no sign of slowing down as more people than ever look to give the innovative console a try during lockdown. However, there appears to be some confusion over how well the console has been doing in 2020.

Golden Casino News reported that Nintendo shifted 4.2 million Switch consoles in March 2020. An incredible number and more than the company achieves during most quarters, let alone a single month. After the figure made all sorts of headlines, u/Robbie00379 took to Reddit and highlighted why the reported number is an inflated one. Not inflated by Nintendo, but by whoever first reported the numbers.

The Redditor points out that according to official Nintendo figures, 52.48 million Switches had been sold worldwide by December 31, 2019. Those same official figures also confirm that GCN’s 55.77 million units sold by the end of Q1 2020 is correct. That means during the first three months of this year, 3.29 million consoles were sold worldwide. A much more believable and realistic figure.

It’s difficult to see where the confusion has come over these figures. The statistics used to calculate what appears to be an exaggerated figure switch from quarterly to monthly midway through 2019. That’s despite Nintendo only reporting numbers every three months. The graph also claims total units sold dropped by 660,000 in July 2019. Unless 660,000 consoles were returned and not a single one was sold, that’s impossible.

Regardless, the Switch remains one of the most popular handheld consoles to date.
