On October 8th, NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat 11 would be seeing a brand new upgraded version called Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate along with the release of Kombat Pack 2. With a litany of upgrades coming to the title with the release of its Ultimate edition, Kombat Pack 2 supplements the upgrade with three new characters as the fighting game makes the journey to the next generation of console platforms. Among the three characters is the Edenian Prince Rain, who has remained a fan-favorite of the franchise since his debut in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.
A demi-god, Rain’s capabilities have often been reflected in his playstyle, with the ability to summon lightning from above and manipulating the elements not unlike characters such as Raiden and Fujin. His last appearance was in Mortal Kombat X as a non-playable character within the Story Mode, where he fought alongside Mileena as she ascended to the throne of Outworld after the death of Shao Kahn. This would later prove to be a ruse, as Rain himself desired the throne of Outworld, a fact that came to light during the events of the Story Mode. His return to Mortal Kombat as a playable character within MK11’s Kombat Pack 2 marks his first playable appearance since Mortal Kombat (2011), and the Edenian demi-god brings with him tricks both new and old.
From his origins as one of Mortal Kombat’s palette-swapped ninjas, Rain’s attire has received a number of alterations through the years in an effort to convey his regality, separating him from his origins while also incorporating his water manipulation into his move pool. Rain’s special moves originally consisted of three signature techniques. The Water Bubble technique would allow Rain to engulf an opponent in water and manipulate their position briefly. The Lightning ability would summon a bolt of lightning down from above. However, perhaps his most famous technique was the Superkick, which was a seemingly ordinary roundhouse that sent opponents all the way around the screen. Mortal Kombat 11 brings these back with even more in his arsenal.
How Rain Is Different In Mortal Kombat 11
Rain’s moveset appears to have taken more inspiration from his standing as a demi-god in the Mortal Kombat universe, with multiple techniques taking advantage of Rain’s ability to manipulate water while also playing into established attacks in a natural progression from his previous appearances. In a twist on an old classic, players can now see their opponents vanishing into a dimensional tear when Rain connects with his Superkick before spitting them out on the other side of the screen. Rain’s Aqua Splash makes a return as well, with the amplified version borrowing from the Superkick and sending the opponent around the fighting field.
Rain’s Water Bubble has seen a change, only allowing Rain to manipulate his opponent’s position when the technique is amplified. This change will force players to carefully consider meter economy when playing as Rain, as having the meter to burn to amplify the Water Bubble may prove to be key for closing distance and shutting down a zoning game. Rain’s mobility, as shown in his Mortal Kombat 11 reveal trailer, has seen a substantial overhaul as well, with his control over water enabling him to split, reform, and even allow attacks to phase right through him, giving players a variety of offensive and defensive tools at their disposal. Rain has also been given a brand new weapon in Mortal Kombat 11, as he wields a katar in his right hand, replacing the Storm Sword from Armageddon.
While Rain sees a lot of returning techniques and tricks from his previous appearances, players may find that he has plenty of retooled and reworked abilities up his sleeve. With the progression of his techniques taking place through his playable appearances, Mortal Kombat 11 appears to be the best representation of Rain’s capabilities as a demi-god within the world of Mortal Kombat. Players will be able to see more and get their hands on the Edenian Prince when Kombat Pack 2 for Mortal Kombat 11 launches on November 17th at USD $14.99.
