The complete Modern Family series is coming to streaming services Hulu and Peacock this February in a surprising collaboration between companies. Modern Family, a mockumentary family sitcom, followed the ups and downs of a blended family from Southern California. The show premiered in 2009 and ended just last year. During its extensive run, Modern Family became critically acclaimed and won a variety of awards, including 22 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Hulu and Peacock belong to a small list of highly rated streaming services providing users with a variety of entertaining shows and movies. The collaboration between Hulu and Peacock, while surprising, is not unheard of. Other popular shows conveniently available on both services include 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, and Law & Order: SVU. Both networks are also known for releasing exclusive shows like Hulu’s successful The Handmaid’s Tale and Peacock’s popular Saved by the Bell revival.
According to ComicBook, Modern Family will be available to stream on both Hulu and Peacock starting February 3rd. Usually, sitcoms make exclusive deals for streaming, but Disney (Hulu) and NBCUniversal (Peacock) have entered into a partnership to stream all 11 seasons on their services. The agreement between the two streaming services is a surprising one, but representatives from both companies are enthusiastic about it, especially because the show has storylines that everyone can enjoy. Val Boreland, Executive Vice President, Content Acquisitions, NBCUniversal Entertainment, Television & Streaming shared his enthusiasm by noting that Modern Family fits in perfectly with other Peacock shows:
“Peacock is home to a massive catalog of iconic movies and shows, so a groundbreaking comedy like Modern Family is a perfect addition and representative of the quality entertainment our free and premium customers enjoy on the service. Because viewers of all ages love Modern Family, we are creating a fan experience on Peacock that goes beyond just episodes of the series to include curated collections, bonus content, and more.”
During its original run, each episode was released weekly on Hulu the day after it aired, but only one season at a time was accessible for streaming. While Modern Family is returning to Hulu, this will be the first time the show it its entirety will be available at once. Brian Henderson, Vice President, Content Partnerships, Hulu noted the show’s return to the platform as a fortuitous one:
“We were fortunate to bring this beloved series to Hulu audiences next-day during its celebrated run, and now we’re excited to offer every episode so new fans can meet the Pritchetts, Dunphys and Tuckers and old friends can visit them again.”
Modern Family was a highly rated and widely watched show, which makes it a great option for streaming services because it will attract more subscribers to Hulu and Peacock. Releasing the show on two competing networks is particularly good move for viewers because those who have Peacock but not Hulu (and the other way around) will be able to access the show without subscribing to yet another service. For Hulu, it is another great addition to a robust selection of comedy shows already available. Modern Family had a long run, which made it hard for the earlier seasons to be watched without buying them. Now, all those who didn’t watch the show during its original run or who didn’t buy the earlier seasons finally have an opportunity to experience the full show as well.
