Money Heist’s young bank robber Daniel Ramos a.k.a. Denver is known for his unique, braying laugh – but actor Jaime Lorente doesn’t actually laugh like that in real life. Denver having an annoying laugh was written into the script as part of his character, and Lorente improvised different laughs during his audition until he came up with the sound that is now an aural signature of the show.

Introduced in Money Heist season 1, Denver is the son of Moscow (Paco Tous), a veteran robber who was recruited by the Professor (Álvaro Morte) due to his skill in digging tunnels. Moscow agreed to the Royal Mint heist on the condition that his son would also be a part of the crew, since Denver had just gotten into big trouble by losing an expensive package of drugs. The Professor reluctantly agreed to the father-and-son team, even though it violated his rule against personal attachments. Denver made it out of the Royal Mint, and returned in Money Heist season 3 for the Bank of Spain heist.

The character of Denver was written in the script as having a “trashy laugh,” and it’s one of his defining features. The harsh machine-gun spray of cackling is simultaneously annoying and addictive to listen to, and it works to either heighten and relieve the tension of a scene, depending on the situation. Speaking in an interview with Identity Mag, Lorente explained that his improvised Denver laugh was crucial to him landing the role in Money Heist:

“The laugh actually came up on the casting for the show. From the very beginning, they wanted Denver to have a unique and significant laugh. And what happened is that I kept trying different ones, I found this one and we settled on it. And that was probably the main reason I was selected for this role.”

Asked during a press round table (as reported by GMA News) whether he laughs like Denver in real life, Lorente laughed (normally) in response and said, “No, no, dear God if it was my laugh I would have tried to change it already.”

From a character standpoint, Denver’s bizarre laugh suits him very well. He doesn’t have much in the way of a filter, usually speaking whatever’s on his mind, and a loud and abrasive laugh fits with his loud and abrasive personality. He’s also a compulsive joker, and his laugh is frequently directed at his own jokes. Yet there’s also a forced element to it that suggests a mask of bravado that Denver puts up to protect himself.

Because it was written into the script from the start, Denver’s laugh hasn’t gone unnoticed by other characters. Arturo (Enrique Arce) has angrily mocked it, and Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) does an uncanny imitation of it. Though some fans find the sound incredibly annoying, Denver’s laugh was sorely missed in Money Heist season 4, where he had very little to laugh about.

The show left off with the gang still inside the Bank of Spain, with an army waiting for them outside and 90 tons of gold to be somehow transported out of the building. We’ll have to wait for Money Heist season 5 to find out how exactly they’re planning to make they’re escape, but hopefully Denver will have the last laugh.
