Two Monster Hunter games were announced today during Nintendo’s Mini Direct Partner Showcase. Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will be Nintendo Switch exclusives. Both will be released in 2021.

The Monster Hunter franchise reached the height of its popularity with the most recent release of Monster Hunter: World in 2018. The title quickly became Camcom’s best-selling game ever, selling 7.5 million copies in its first three months on the market. Since then, Capcom has released a Nintendo Switch port for an older Monster Hunter game, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, but has not revealed plans for a new main-franchise game until now.

During today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin were announced. Monster Hunter Rise is the next game in the main Monster Hunter franchise and will feature new monsters as well as new gameplay experiences. It will be an open-world adventure with a four-player co-op mode available. Perhaps most importantly, Monster Hunter Rise introduces a new companion, the Palamute, to go along with the popular Palico that has long been a part of the series. Additionally, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a sequel to the Monster Hunter spin-off game for the 3DS which originally released in 2017. It is a role-playing game, but it does deviate from the typical Monster Hunter RPG experience. However, it still takes place in the same world, and features familiar monsters and characters – albeit in a different art style.

The announcement of these Monster Hunter games for the Nintendo Switch does not come as a huge surprise. An insider leak earlier this month basically confirmed Capcom’s plan for a new Monster Hunter main game for the Switch, and a subsequent Capcom sale for a variety of its Switch games, including the aforementioned Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, added credence to this rumor. It certainly tracks that Capcom would want to drum up interest in the Monster Hunter franchise as a whole before releasing a new game. Plus, this announcement follows the report that the anticipated Monster Hunter movie has been delayed until April 2021. Coinciding Monster Hunter Rise’s release close to the release of the movie, and following up a few months later with the release of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, will likely bode well for Capcom’s sales.

Capcom’s past success with the Monster Hunter games has fans excited for the release of Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin and what the success of these games could mean for other Capcom titles. Capcom has already said it would be willing to release new games in older franchises. The popularity of these new Monster Hunter titles could be the final push that Capcom needs to follow through on this and reboot old favorites.
