Fans of the Monster Hunter franchise had some exciting news this week when, in a new trailer, players got a closer look at Monster Hunter Rise’s open-ended world. This newest title is the sixth main installment in the Monster Hunter franchise. It was announced at the Tokyo Game Show 2020 on September 17 and is set to be released on March 26, 2021. Get excited to jump back into the world of larger than life monsters, now free to explore!

The trailer’s premiere was met with excitement not only about the open-world concept, but several new gameplay mechanics and features, including a new movement mechanic in the wire bugs, the introduction of new companions, and the return of four-player online co-op mode. It revealed several new monster designs, as well as covering the basic plot and setting of the game: Fifty years after the first “calamity,” the Hunters in Kamura Village fear a new rampage and the return of Magnamalo.

The trailer, uploaded on Capcom USA’s YouTube channel, reveals that Monster Hunter Rise, unlike its more linear predecessors, will feature an open-world setting. This will let players choose the order in which they complete the storyline. They will be able to literally pick their battles, progressing the story on their own terms through action triggered cutscenes and battles, all the while exploring the incredibly detailed setting.

This game, which returns to portable consoles after Monster Hunter World’s successful launch on standard PlayStation and Xbox consoles in 2018, will feature the unique inclusion of wire bugs. These bugs will allow players to more easily traverse the new, open maps by swinging through the air in essentially a grappling hook mechanic. It will also include spoken voice lines, which sets its protagonists apart from their more typically silent previous incarnations.

On top of the release of new exclusive merchandise, this open-world concept has been well-received by players. Especially after the recent disappointment with Monster Hunter World’s latest Iceborne update, it’s refreshing to see such positive reactions surrounding the new title. It looks like Monster Hunter Rise is set to launch the series to new heights.
