The Mortal Kombat franchise has spent decades building a reputation as one of the world’s most prominent and prolific fighting game franchises. It also carved another reputation early on for extreme violence, though that’s much less controversial these days.

When people debate the relative strength and weaknesses of different fighters in Mortal Kombat 11, intelligence is rarely included in that discussion. Admittedly, fighting style and move sets are far more important than intelligence. That being said, some characters do come across as being much smarter than others. And, it’s safe to say that Baraka will not make the cut for Mortal Kombat’s most intelligent characters.

10 Terminator T-800

In a possible future, a powerful artificial intelligence system overtook the world and tried to wipe out humanity. A key part of its plan was the Terminator T-800, an endoskeleton with living tissue surrounding it to make it look more human. Armies of them devastated the world.

The T-800 appeared in Mortal Kombat 11 as a playable fighter. While its raw power makes it a formidable opponent, the T-800’s computerized intelligence gives it a significant advantage over most of its opponents.

9 Johnny Cage

An OG competitor from the very first Mortal Kombat game, Johnny Cage has established himself as one of the foremost defenders of Earth. He also met Sonya Blade thanks to the tournament.

Cage isn’t exactly a genius, but he is a low-key smart guy. He has proven time and time again that he understands aspects of the real cost of this war that others don’t. The man comes across as an airhead, but it’s an act to throw his opponents off guard.

8 Liu Kang

Since the day he was born, Liu Kang was raised and trained to be in the Mortal Kombat tournament. For better or worse, the entire focus of his life has been on winning that tournament and saving Earthrealm.

Other than Raiden, he might know more about this whole situation than anyone else involved on the side of the good guys. Knowledge is power, and Liu Kang is one of the most powerful players in the game.

7 RoboCop

RoboCop’s arc through life has been difficult, to say the least. Murdered by a Detroit street gang, Officer Alex Murphy was revived by OCP, the corporate overlords of the police department. They turned him into a cyborg police officer called RoboCop.

But being a cyborg offers him an incredible array of options. RoboCop’s advanced tactical mind and sensors give him a huge advantage in many combat situations that it would be difficult for most to deal with.

6 Kano

The mercenary leader of the Black Dragon criminal organization, Kano has been tormenting Sonya Blade as long as Mortal Kombat has been around. It’s quite possible that he’s the biggest scumbag and coward in the game.

That being said, Kano should never be underestimated. When he wants to be, Kano is a great fighter, but he’s also a criminal mastermind. If he would actually do the right thing, Kano would be an incredible force for good. But there’s no money in that.

5 Sonya Blade

As a law enforcement officer, Sonya blade spent a lot of her time chasing Kano around. He managed to stay one step ahead of her, and out of jail. It was her obsession with him that led her to Mortal Kombat in the first place.

Sonya’s role in Mortal Kombat has changed drastically over the years. She became the General of Earthrealm Special Forces, which has put her at the center of the war. Her capable leadership and strategic mind are often the only things standing between Earth and oblivion.

4 Cassie Cage

The daughter of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage has proven herself to be a warrior on par with her parents. Fortunately, she has also chosen to stand with them against the invading forces bearing down on Earth.

Cassie was raised to fight, but she was also raised to be smart about it. She has found ways to enhance her own formidable abilities with a variety of weapons and technology. Given the fight Cassie is in for, any edge is a good edge.

3 Raiden

Raiden is the chief defender of Earthrealm. He has spent seemingly endless years marshaling the forces of Earthrealm against the endless threat of the Netherrealm.

Regardless of the specific incarnation, Raiden is quite likely the most powerful character in play. His divine abilities, intelligence, and knowledge make him a key source of guidance and support for people like Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang.

2 The Joker

Batman has spent a good portion of his career dealing with the Joker. To be blunt, it’s not completely clear if Joker even understands that they are enemies. He might actually believe that they are best friends. In a weird way, they might be.

But Joker plays his craziness to his advantage. In truth, the man is an absolute genius. Keeping in mind that he is actually is insane, he also hams it up to lull his enemies into a false sense of security. Batman knows this. The warriors of Mortal Kombat don’t.

1 Shang Tsung

While he hasn’t appeared in every game, the presence of Shang Tsung is almost always felt. This powerful, shapeshifting, soul-stealing sorcerer is well known for his lavish lifestyle and for throwing massive parties. But it’s all a distraction from the truth about him.

Without question, Shang Tsung is the most intelligent character in all of Mortal Kombat. His selfish allegiance to Shao Kahn has given him many opportunities others in his service do not get. He knows how to manipulate everyone and everything to his advantage.
