With Evo 2019 set for an explosive weekend of competitive action, some wonder if we will see a shift in the major characters played in Mortal Kombat 11. Since the game released in April of this year, a hierarchy of the best characters has emerged and has since become more precise in which fighters are the strongest in a tournament setting.
Below is a list of the fighters we are most likely to see in abundance during the event, and a brief explanation as to their popularity and use in the competitive scene.
Shang Tsung
Since his release as the first of six incoming DLC characters in the Kombat Pack 1, speculation has been high about the potential of Shang Tsung to dominate the competitive scene with the right playstyle.
Dominique “SonicFox” McLean has been streaming his tournament-legal Warlock setup for Shang Tsung, right up until a month ago, and then he stopped completely. Did SonicFox decide to go all in on the sorcerer, and so he needed to keep his playstyle unseen for the upcoming Evo 2019? We will know soon enough, but watching the VODs shows an immensely powerful character who can keep opponents at range with little effort.
Geras
Leading up to EVO 2019, the continuous joke has been that we hope not to see only Geras mirror matches all weekend, and there is some truth to the statement. So far, not a single tournament has come and gone without the use of Geras more than most characters.
The reasoning for his usage is no mystery. Since the game launched, Geras has been a favorite for his raw power, safe combos that can go into block, and his ranged attacks. It is getting stale watching Geras fight, but there is not much we can do about that.
Jacqui Briggs
A favorite of the pros, Jacqui brings a unique blend of beatdown rush and several mix ups that always keep the opponent guessing, which is what makes her so strong in the competitive scene. Of all the fighters in the game, Jacqui is perhaps the one to take a player all the way to the top, along with another strong fighter, Sonya Blade.
Sonya Blade
Sonya is no stranger to the top of the competitive scene, and SonicFox recently stated that he considers her the best overall fighter in the game. This stems from her strong combos that can wipe out half of your health bar, and she has both overhead and low attack strings to move into that high-damage territory, which is not something all characters have by design. Her keep-away game is outstanding with the speed of her projectile, meaning she is a force to be reckoned with.
At the recent Combo Breaker 2019, Brad “Scar” Vaughn was able to edge out SonicFox and take the top spot at the tournament through an impressive use of Sonya Blade, so we should expect to see her at EVO throughout the weekend.
Erron Black
Erron Black began quite strong in MK11, as he was always powerful in Mortal Kombat X. Black has a broad and versatile range of tools to draw upon, making him a great choice in any situation. As expected, his acid floor trap is often put to great use in dictating where the battle will take place and encourages a proactive style of fighting.
Cassie Cage
Cassie earns a spot on this list because while she has been used to great effect by the pros in various competitive events, she is perhaps the fairest of all the fighters. She can deal damage, but not as much as Sonya. She can zone with her pistol attacks, but there are other characters who also excel at this. Cassie is middle of the road, but in the right hands, that is more than enough to come out on top.
Kabal
Kabal has been gaining momentum since the launch of the game. While he was too strong in MKX, players initially considered him a bit weak in MK11. So far it feels like Kabal’s strength lies in punishing weakness, which is to say, to catch an opponent when they have made a mistake and capitalize into a combo of his own. This is a double edged sword, because while this might be useful to the above-average player, waiting for such opportunities at this level of play at Evo 2019 is not likely to be a winning strategy.
Still, Kabal might surprise us this weekend with a strong performance.
Beyond these fighters, others like Scorpion, Baraka, Cetrion, Kung Lao, and Shao Khan might see some fringe play, but likely in response to a specific character, as a tool to counter a particular problem. These characters are fine, but outclassed by those listed above.
Now that the game has been out for three months, we might see a shift in the meta this weekend. Perhaps players have had enough time to figure out some other character not on the above list. If not, we are still sure to see some great technical play this weekend, but with the same old characters from each of the tournaments seen since May.
