Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Mortal Kombat (2021).

The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie made a number of changes from the story of the games that inspired it, including major points like how Jax got his cyborg arms. And in the case of the heroic soldier Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs, the movie changed the details of how Jax got his trademark metal arms in two major respects; how he lost his arms and how they were replaced afterward.

First appearing in Mortal Kombat 2, Jax was the leader of an elite American military group known simply as Special Forces, which had been formed to combat international crime cartels that traditional police forces couldn’t manage. While tracking Kano, leader of the Black Dragon mercenary group, Jax became aware of the Mortal Kombat tournament and the threat that other dimensions, such as Outworld, posed towards the Earth. At the recommendation of Jax and his subordinate Sonya Blade, Special Forces was reconfigured into the Outer World Investigation Agency and their focus shifted from international crime to interdimensional exploration and containment.

Jax’s background is largely unchanged in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, though the circumstances of how he becomes the familiar figure from the games are drastically different. The original Mortal Kombat timeline never explained whether Jax lost his arms in battle or if he volunteered to received mechanical enhancements. In the alternate timeline of MK 2011, Jax was forced to have his arms replaced with robotic prosthetics after a battle with the telekinetic ninja Ermac left him literally torn to pieces. The new film sees Jax losing his limbs after he heroically stays behind to fight Sub Zero in order to allow Cole Young and his family to escape an assassination attempt by the forces of Outworld.

Miraculously, while the icy attack shattered Jax’s arms, it also saved his life, with the ice constricting his blood flow long enough for him to be rescued by followers of Raiden and taken to their temple, where he met with the other chosen champions of Earth. The monks in the temple were able to restore Jax’s arms and heal him using advanced medicine from another dimension. Unfortunately, while Jax’s new arms were functional, they were also skeletal in appearance and looked frailer than ordinary human hands. Thankfully, Jax’s metamorphosis was not finished.

Jax would take on his familiar appearance late in the film, after the forces of Shang Tsung attacked Raiden’s temple. Jax, who had been training to discover his inner power, found his Arcana after Sonya Blade became pinned under a large boulder. Struggling to move the rock with his new prosthetics, Jax tapped into his hidden reserves and his limbs were transformed, becoming the big guns Mortal Kombat gamers everywhere know and love, as he found the strength to save his friend and became the hero he was destined to be.
