There’s more than one way to freeze a kombatant. Ever since 1993’s original Mortal Kombat hit the arcades, freezing opponents solid and breaking them apart has been a staple feature thanks to ice ninja Sub-Zero. The character is just as iconic as his rival Scorpion, and a competitor named Sub-Zero has appeared in every main game in the series so far. Each time, it seems that the developers at NetherRealm want to top themselves and enhance Sub-Zero’s abilities, which means that he’s wielded numerous frozen weapons. No matter the implement, it always ends up the same way for whoever he’s facing.

Of course, Sub-Zero isn’t the only character to wield the power of ice in these games. Players have the opportunity to fight as several members of the Lin Kuei throughout the Mortal Kombat series. This includes Frost, the robotic ninjas Sektor and Cyrax, and the Elder Sub-Zero, who eventually became Noob Saibot. None of these ninjas can top the younger and more recognizable Sub-Zero when it comes to tools of destruction made from ice. When he’s not freezing opponents on the spot, he’s leaving them with a bad case of freezer burn thanks to axes, blades, and other ice-cold weaponry.

Going through the games, it’s hard to foresee NetherRealm coming up with more options for Sub-Zero to wield, but Ed Boon and the Mortal Kombat developers always seem to have something up their sleeves. While fans wait for news on a new entry, here’s an overview of every ice weapon Sub-Zero has produced so far.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Kori Blade

Perhaps Sub-Zero’s most famous ice weapon is the Kori Blade, the weapon he summoned in the middle trilogy of games where weapon fighting styles were all the rage. From Deadly Alliance to Armageddon, players could play as a swordsman variant of the character with weapons fully incorporating the icy blade. It still makes appearances in newer games, but the blade shatters much more easily now.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Ice Daggers

Sub-Zero’s icy daggers are a Lin Kuei technique he shares with his former apprentice Frost. The daggers are used sparingly but to great effect, especially in the Pick Your Brain Brutality in Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Frost Hammer

A warhammer from up north, the Frost Hammer creates a blast when it hits the ground and shatters, stunning the opponent. Sup-Zero usually follows up by producing a second hammer and scoring a direct hit before furthering his kombo.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Polar Axe

When his fists just can’t get the job done in Mortal Kombat, Sub-Zero relies on his icy powers to summon various bladed weapons. In recent games, several of his fighting styles incorporate the Polar Axe to great effect, replacing his basic martial arts with weapon-assisted carnage.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Ice Scepter

Only appearing in Mortal Kombat 4, Sub-Zero’s Ice Scepter was an early iteration of the Kori Blade created during the franchise’s experimentation with weapons and three-dimensional fighting.

Sub-Zero’s Ice Scepter freezes opponents when it strikes and enhances uppercuts, but players can also knock it from Sub-Zero’s hands with a well-placed kick.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Ice Bomb

Available once Sub-Zero transforms into Cyber Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat (2011), this weapon is a freezing version of the bombs Cyrax is known for using regularly. Sub-Zero’s recovery from his cybernetic fate forces him to lose this weapon, but he’s likely much happier to just be using regular Ice Blasts.

Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero’s Ice Clone

A signature move that Sub-Zero lost in Mortal Kombat 11, the Ice Clone creates a replica of Sub-Zero on the field that serves as a trap for the opponent, freezing them if they touch it. While it is technically a special ability rather than a traditional weapon, Sub-Zero gains the ability to toss it at opponents in Mortal Kombat X – making it a surprising and fun ice weapon in Mortal Kombat.
