The first Mortal Kombat was a trailblazer, showing that extreme violence could exist in a medium like video games. The gore, as well as the use of real actors to act out the fights onscreen, were revolutionary for the time. Despite all the controversy that followed the game, it managed to be so successful that it spawned a franchise that’s lasted 27 years and counting, and is still releasing new installments to this very day.

It’s definitely a game worthy of any hall of fame, and it looks like The Strong National Museum Of Play agrees, as the first Mortal Kombat is among the inductees of the 2019 class of the World Video Game Hall Of Fame.

The Strong National Museum Of Play is an institution also houses the National Toy Hall Of Fame, as well as the International Center For The History Of Electronic Games. Since 2015 they’re added classic games such as Super Mario Bros., Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong to the annuls of history, alongside more modern entries such as Halo: Combat Evolved, The Sims, Grand Theft Auto III, and World Of Warcraft.

Mortal Kombat’s induction isn’t a big surprise, considering its history and longevity. However, considering that its biggest competitor from the 90s, Street Fighter II, made it into the hall in 2017, as well as the other famous innovator of violent gaming, DOOM, was inducted in 2015, Kombat’s induction has seemed pretty inevitable for quite some time.

Mortal Kombat will be joined by Nintendo’s racing juggernaut, Super Mario Kart, the game that your grandparents love, Microsoft’s Solitaire, and the text based spelunking fantasy, Colossal Cave Adventure. These games were chosen from a list that also included Half-Life, Myst, Sid Meier’s Civilization, Super Smash Bros Melee, and for some reason, Candy Crush Saga.

The Strong Museum held their ceremony for the inductees, and original game designers Ed Boon, John Tobias, and John Vogel sent along a video thanking the museum for inducting their game. They even managed to sneak in one of the game’s trademark “toasty!” catchphrases via a digital avatar of original programmer Dan Forden.

Ed Boon is still working on Mortal Kombat games to this day, and the latest entry to the series is one of its most epic yet.
