A co-creator of Mortal Kombat may have teased a new, upcoming game via tweet where the heroes of Marvel and DC could face off against one another. While both superhero brands have crossed over with other intellectual properties in the past for fighting games, they have yet to crossover with one another in this format.

Marvel and DC are the quintessential names when it comes to modern day superheroes, but they rarely have anything to do with each other. Most crossovers of note between the two companies have strictly been through the comics, leaving fans to imagine what these unique encounters would look like in other forms of popular media. When it comes to video games, both brands have made noteworthy crossovers with other recognizable intellectual properties such as Capcom and Mortal Kombat, but now that might be changing.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon retweeted a post from director James Gunn that celebrated the recent announcement of the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In his tweet, Boon commented on how impressive it was that Gunn has managed to work on both a Marvel (Guardians of the Galaxy) and DC (The Suicide Squad) property. A thinking face emoji finishes Boon’s tweet, and this has led some to speculate that perhaps the game developer is following in the film director’s footsteps.

While such a crossover may have seemed somewhat impossible only a few years ago, the superhero landscape is changing as companies are starting to be more liberal with how their intellectual properties are used. The speculation that it would be a crossover fighting game seems to only be coming from the fact that the co-creator of Mortal Kombat is the one teasing it. There has been no confirmation if this project is even happening as of now, but fans responding to Boon’s tweet seem to be optimistic.

If a Marvel and DC crossover is to happen in the gaming world, then a fighting title would be the best option as it feeds into the mythos of the ‘who would win in a fight’ arguments. The biggest challenge a game like this could face would be its story, if one was included. Both companies would likely prefer to see their characters get the better treatment, and finding a balance might be difficult. If any game developer is up to the challenge, however, it’s likely the minds behind Mortal Kombat.
