Introduced alongside the third title in the fighting game series, Kabal is one of Mortal Kombat’s longest-running characters, but many have wondered about his face. Those who’ve played any of the recent reboot titles, such as Mortal Kombat 11, have noticed it’s impossible to ignore Kabal’s charred skin; indeed, his disfigured face is almost always hidden behind a mask and respirator. So what happened to Kabal’s face, according to story canon?
Kabal is an underground favorite, recognizable not just for his mask but his weapons: typically a pair of hookswords, but in some cases sawblades. He was designed by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias and modeled after the Tusken Raiders from Star Wars, albeit with a number of differences. The character’s original Fatalities played on his disfigurement, since he would expose his face or use his respirator to inflate opponents’ heads.
There are actually two answers to what happened to Kabal’s face, depending on whether one follows the original story or the 2011 reboot timeline. When Kabal debuted with 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3 he was positioned as a former member of Earthrealm’s Black Dragon crime syndicate, of which another prominent fighter – the Australian mercenary Kano – was also a member. After the invasion by Outworld emperor Shao Khan, Raiden selects Kabal as one of Earthrealm’s defenders, only for him to end up maimed in an attack by Kahn’s extermination squads. Though dependent on his mask and respirator to live, Kabal (briefly) abandons Black Dragon to help repel Kahn’s legions.
Kabal In Alternate Mortal Kombat Timelines
The 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot changes up Kabal’s story considerably. While still a former Black Dragon member, he actually joins the New York Police Department’s riot control squads alongside Kurtis Stryker. During the Shao Khan invasion, he and Stryker manage to defeat fighters like Mileena and Reptile, but Kabal ends up burned by the Goro-like Kintaro and kidnapped by Kano. The latter recruits Shang Tsung to heal Kabal, but lung damage leaves him stuck with his signature respirator, and he ultimately turns on Kano for siding with Outworld. Things actually get worse from there, but that’s for players to discover, given the series’ renewed focus on plot.
It remains to be seen how Kabal might feature in the as-yet unannounced Mortal Kombat 12. The events of Mortal Kombat 11 play considerably with characters and timelines, and Kabal has been sidelined before, as in 2015’s Mortal Kombat X. Yet with such a long history, it’s unlikely Kabal will vanish from the Mortal Kombat series completely.
