2020 was a tear-jerking year. Just as the year was emotional so were some incredible K-drama scenes that had fans reaching for the tissue box. K-dramas are well known for their heartwrenching and dramatic emotional scenes. Often, viewers will go through many of these moments in one episode alone.

These scenes can range from tearful love confessions, maybe even rejections, to the death of a supporting character. Let’s not forget the explosive emotion over a character finally admitting how broken they really are inside. Just as the characters pour out their souls with tears streaming down their faces, so are the viewers.

10 Seon-gyeom Hugs Mi-joo (Run On)

For anyone watching Run On on Netflix, they would know that Seon-gyeom (Im Si-wan) doesn’t do well in expressing emotion or relating to the average person. In episode 13 of the show, Seon-gyeom and Mi-joo (Shin Se-kyung) finally start dating but it soon crumbles when she breaks up with him because of his overbearing father.

The ending scene of the episode is what had fans tearing. Seon-gyeom was having a hard time accepting the breakup and catches up to Mi-joo and hugs her from behind. It’s hard seeing K-drama main characters cry. Start-Up had more than a handful of tear-jerking scenes like when Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon-ho) cries in his grandmother’s arms over his loneliness. What got fans really sobbing was when Dal-mi (Bae Suzy) knows that Do-san (Nam Joo-hyuk) isn’t the boy from their childhood letters but Ji-Pyeong (Kim Seon-ho).

They meet and Do-san asks her to stop crying and explains he wanted to make her dream come true for one day. That one day was perfect and he didn’t want it to end. Dal-mi fell for him thinking it was her childhood pen-pal. It was a lie and Dal-mi feels betrayed Do-san didn’t tell her the truth.

When it comes to dealing with emotions, Sae-ro-yi (Park Seo-joon) messed up with Yi-seo (Kim Da-mi). In episode 11 as the characters sit drinking Soju, Sae-ro-yi admits to liking Soo-ah (Kwon Nara) and never having feelings for Yi-seo. Yi-seo is heartbroken and runs out with Sae-ri-yo following.

With tears in her eyes, her inner thoughts are telling her to tell him the truth. She tells Sae-ro-yi she loves him. To make matters worse, he tells her she’s mistaken. Ouch. Sae-ro-yi rejects her giving excuses that he’s older, because of work and so on. Exactly what she never wanted to hear. In late 2002, the K-drama 18 Again would sound familiar to an American audience. It’s an adaptation of the Zac Efron movie 17 Again. It follows the same storyline of an older man going through a divorce, his kids hate him, he loses his job and gets a shot at redoing it all when he becomes a teenager again.

But the K-drama amped up the emotional scenes, especially between Da-jung (Kim Ha-neul) and his father at a basketball game. Da-jung realizes his father is watching him play and his father shockingly realizes it’s really his son. The scene is impactful as no words are exchanged. Da-jung uses sign language to apologize to his father. Afterward, they hug and cry in each other’s arms.

5 Hye-jin’s Apology (Hi Bye, Mama!)

Hi Bye, Mama! is easily one of the most emotional K-dramas to watch through and through. There isn’t one episode that won’t have viewers crying. One of them being Hye-jin (Bae Yoon-kyung), a young woman who died by suicide. In this scene, she stands in front of her mother as she stands outside her daughter’s workplace where she was bullied. Hye-jin explains why she did it but regretted it. She forgot she had a mom and seeing her in so much pain for what she did was far worse. Her mother stands in the cold every day and a tear falls from her eye.

This suspense melodrama had fans on edge but breaking down in tears in episode 11. The detectives know that Hee-sung (Lee Joon-gi) is really Do Hyun-soo and plan to arrest him. Ji-won (Moon Chae-won) warns him and is angry that he basically ruined their happy life. On the bridge, Ji-won tearfully yells at him for what he’s done saying he can no longer live like he used to.

He sobs and asks her why she didn’t abandon him if she knew. Even as a detective, she cared and covered for him as his wife. She says he knows why and he apologizes to her for everything and only wants to go home. This scene had fans clutching at their hearts just like Hee-sung did.

All he wanted was his father’s attention but ended up going crazy in the process.

1 So Mun Reunites With His Parents (The Uncanny Counter)

As The Uncanny Counter came to a close, So Mun (Jo Byung-gyu) finally gets to close an important chapter in his life. As a child, he lost both parents in a car accident which later turned out to be part of a bigger evil scheme. After all of So Mun’s hardships, he finally gets to see his parents.

In the scene, both his parents realize years have passed and So Mun must now be a teenager. Before moving on, his mother turns and recognizes So Mun as her son stating she’ll always recognize him. She apologizes for leaving him and he apologizes for thinking it was his fault they died but they can now be proud of him. He finally got his happily ever after.
