Motorola is committing to bringing remote wireless charging to its future Android smartphones, allowing users to charge their devices without plugging them in or placing them on a wireless charging pad. It’s seen as the next big step for smartphone battery technology, and Motorola now seems poised to introduce the feature before Apple does with the iPhone.
The idea behind remote wireless charging is to make smartphone charging as convenient as possible. With existing wireless chargers, phones need to be placed on a charging pad/stand to refuel. While it is more convenient than wired charging, it still requires the phone to be left stationary while it juices up. Remote wireless charging fixes this by allowing phones to charge over the air. A wireless charging station transmits wireless power waves to nearby devices, thus allowing them to get juiced up so long as they’re close enough to the power station. It’s a concept that’s been teased for years, and slowly but surely, it’s something that’s gradually turning into a reality.
Wanting to make sure that reality happens sooner rather than later, Motorola is ready to bring the technology to its own devices. Motorola announced it’s partnering with GuRu Wireless to make this happen, with GuRu being one of the many startups developing remote wireless charging technology. While there’s no ETA as to when the feature will be available, Motorola is positioning itself to be one of the first to market with it. That means it could beat companies like Google, Samsung, and even Apple to the punch, which is no small feat at all. Commenting on the news, Motorola VP of Product — Dan Dery — said, “With this solution we will provide a glimpse of the freedom and flexibility that users can enjoy with a revolutionary over-the-air, wireless power technology.”
How GuRu’s Remote Wireless Charging Works
On GuRu’s website, the company says that it uses “Smart Sensing” technology that “enables the use of focused energy beams for highly efficient power transfer.” These energy beams can be transmitted through a variety of form factors, including desktop power stations, remote ones that can move throughout a house, and even permanent fixtures that users can install in the ceiling. Motorola will likely focus on selling desktop hubs for users to charge the phone, but GuRu has clearly thought of a few different ways to use the technology. Charging speeds are expected to be between 5 and 10W, which are typical charging speeds for existing wireless chargers.
It’ll likely be a few more years before remote wireless charging is as ubiquitous as existing charging methods, but even so, it’s exciting that Motorola is already talking about it. It’s a feature that people have been dreaming about for the iPhone and other devices for years. Have a phone running low? Walk over to the nearest power station and it starts charging just like that. It remains to be seen how well GuRu’s tech actually plays out in Motorola’s smartphones, and fingers crossed those future phones aren’t too much further out.
