The Kickstarter for My Singing Monsters: The Board Game, which has players breed and strategically place various monsters, includes a reward tier which allows a backer to design their own monster. My Singing Monsters, developed by Big Blue Bubble Inc. and released in 2012, is a mobile game where players assemble a band composed of various different monsters. Since release the game has been brought to a number of different platforms, including Steam in March 2021.
Board game adaptations of video games are not unheard of, as many popular games and franchises have made the transition from controllers to dice. The popular Witcher series of action role-playing games, developed by CD Projekt Red and based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, was recently added to Kickstarter for funding. The board game, titled The Witcher: Old World, easily surpassed its $300,000 goal by hitting two million dollars in a single day. The upcoming board game was created as a collaboration between CD Projekt Red, creators of the Witcher video games, and Go On Board. A similar event occurred more recently with The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls Requiem, an expansion for the card game based on the 2011 roguelike video game created by Edmund McMillen. Four Souls Requiem was recently added to Kickstarter, where it met its funding goal within three minutes and reached one million dollars within 90 minutes.
My Singing Monsters: The Board Game is being funded on Kickstarter, and the highest-tier pledge allows the backer to design their own monster to be included in the game. The Ultimate Creator Experience pledge, which costs about $8,300 USD, grants the backer an all-expense-paid trip to the studio of creator Big Blue Bubble. Once there, the backer will spend two days working alongside the board game’s team in order to develop a brand-new monster for inclusion in the board game.
Board games have managed to maintain their popularity despite the proliferation of digital entertainment, and many films and video games are now being adapted as board games. Funko Games recently announced an upcoming board game based on The Goonies, a cult-classic 1985 adventure comedy film directed by Richard Donner. The film, which features now-prominent stars such as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, will be turned into a Dungeons and Dragons-esque adventure board game titled The Goonies: Never Say Die.
While board games may seem a bit outdated, there are hours of fun to be had using a classic setup of cardboard and dice. Like many other board game adaptations, My Singing Monsters: The Board Game will put a fresh spin on the mobile title’s typical gameplay. While many Kickstarter projects include truly amazing rewards, the Ultimate Creator Experience reward being offered by Big Blue Bubble will let fans leave a distinct mark upon the final product.
