Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for Narcos: Mexico.

Narcos: Mexico’s Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, played by actor Diego Luna, is a real person who’s still alive today. Diego Luna’s portrayal of the character has been hailed as one of the actor’s best performances. Even though Gallardo didn’t make it to season 3, he was a key part of the main cast up until Narcos: Mexico season 2.

During the ‘70s, Gallardo rose through the ranks of the Mexican underworld by uniting all plazas under his leadership and forming the Guadalajara Cartel, also known as La Federacion. As “El Jefe de Jefes” (The Boss of Bosses), Gallardo gave fellow drug lord Rafael “Rafa” Caro Quintero (Tenoch Huerta Mejia) the means to cultivate seedless marijuana, also known as sinsemilla, on a 1,000-hectare ranch in Chihuahua, the largest growing operation at the time. Working with Amado Carrillo Fuentes (Jose Maria Yazpik), Gallardo used planes to develop a complex network that transported marijuana and cocaine to the U.S. in the ‘80s, stabilizing the price of street drugs in North America. The very foundations of the highly efficient Mexican drug cartels, as depicted in Narcos: Mexico season 3, were laid down by Gallardo’s initial work. By taking a 50% cut of the cocaine they transported from Colombia, Gallardo’s Guadalajara Cartel, before it was divided, is estimated to have raked in an annual $5 billion.

Today, Narcos: Mexico’s Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo is still alive. At 75 years old, Gallardo now resides in the Puente Grande state prison, which is located in Jalisco. Gallardo has been in prison for the last 32 years, beginning in 1989 when he was given a 40-year sentence for the 1985 murder of U.S. DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena (Michael Pena) and Mexican pilot Alfredo Zavala Avelar. Both Kiki and Avelar were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by elements of the Guadalajara Cartel back in season 1. This was the event that triggered U.S. and Mexican authorities to launch an aggressive campaign against the Guadalajara Cartel, the repercussions of which were explored in Narcos: Mexico season 2, in which Gallardo and the other co-founders of La Federacion were arrested. In 2014, during Gallardo’s 25th year in prison, he was transferred to a medium-security facility because of his declining health. However, in 2017, Gallardo was re-sentenced to 37 years in prison, plus a payment of $1.17 million in reparations for his alleged crimes. Apart from Kiki and Avelar’s murder, this list includes bribery, drug trafficking, money laundering, and stockpiling weapons. Prior to his conviction in 2017, Gallardo’s trial lasted for 28 years, the longest in Mexican history.

Apart from Gallardo, Guadalajara Cartel co-founders Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca Carrillo (Joaquin Cosio), the oldest living member of the Guadalajara Cartel, and “Rafa” Caro Quintero were also convicted for Kiki’s kidnapping, torture, and murder. However, only Gallardo remains incarcerated. Although both Don Neto and Rafa also spent time in prison, and were part of the main cast of Narcos: Mexico season 3, the former was released on parole in 2017 and the latter is still at large.

Narcos: Mexico’s Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo is the only perpetrator of Kiki’s death who is still in prison. From the time he was arrested up until a recent interview with NBC News, Gallardo continues to deny all allegations laid out in his extensive criminal record. Given the new 37-year sentence that Gallardo was served in 2017, Gallardo will be in prison for the rest of his life, or until his sentence expires in 2054.
