The world of Naruto is filled with ninja combat, monstrous tailed beasts, and a gutsy young boy who dreams of becoming Hokage. The one thing that seems to be missing from all the excitement is the addition of catchable characters from another popular anime series, Pokémon.

While Pokémon do not exist in the Naruto universe, there are actually plenty of ninjas in the Pokémon universe. These ninjas become not only Pokémon trainers but also Gym Leaders and members of the Elite Four, such as Koga of Fuchsia City. Therefore, Naruto himself would fit right in as a Pokémon master. Here’s what his team of six would look like.

6 Zoroark

In addition to being seen as the kid with a Nine-Tailed Fox sealed inside of him, Naruto was known for his deceptive Shadow Clone and Transformation techniques in his earlier days as a ninja. He could create realistic copies of his body to assist him in battle with the Shadow Clone Jutsu, and he could transform into pretty women to appeal to the likes of Jiraiya with his own unique twist on the Transformation Jutsu.

These deceptive tactics are very similar to another fox, Zoroark, who is fittingly known as the “Illusion Fox Pokémon.” Zoroark’s unique ability allows it to take the shape of other Pokémon or humans as a way to cause confusion for its victims. Its illusions definitely give it an edge in battle, often leaving their opponents vulnerable to unexpected surprise attacks. In Naruto’s party, it would serve as a supportive teammate to throw off and disrupt their opponent’s strategy.

5 Nuzleaf

After the Fourth Shinobi War, Naruto became a hero and legend known throughout the entire ninja world. However, his heart and home will forever be in Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Ever since he was a young boy growing up in Konohagakure, he was always determined to gain the respect of the village by becoming its leader, the Hokage. And, once he became Hokage, his new priority shifted from gaining the village’s respect to now protecting it with his life.

Coincidentally, there is a small leaf Pokémon that can represent Konohagakure–Nuzleaf, whose Japanese name is “Konohana.” And, although it is tiny, Nuzleaf is known to be a mischievous creature like Naruto in his academy days as the “knucklehead ninja.” According to its Pokédex entry, Nuzleaf will lurk in the forest and play with the emotions of nearby humans, often scaring them or leaving them with an uneasy feeling. Together Nuzleaf and Naruto would be the perfect representatives for the Leaf Village.

4 Venusaur

During his training with Jiraiya, Naruto first encountered the talking toads and learned how to summon them for battle. He eventually took it a step further and achieved Sage Mode after training in the Land of Toads, following in the footsteps of elite ninja such as Minato and Jiraiya. Because of this, toads have become associated with and inseparable from Naruto.

Besides Seismitoad, one of the most toad-like Pokémon has to be Venusaur. Venusaur is a giant plant-toad hybrid and would serve as a great substitute for Gamabunta, the jumbo chief toad who Naruto often summons for battle assistance. Rather than having to summon Gamabunta with a scroll, Naruto would be able to send his Venusaur out from its Pokéball. Instead of being grumpy and difficult like Gamabunta, Venusaur would happily and willingly help its trainer out in a pinch.

3 Sunflora

After starting a family of his own, Naruto had a son, Boruto, and two suns, Hinata and Himawari. In Japanese, “Hinata” translates to “sunny place,” while “Himawari” translates to “sunflower.” Therefore, it would make sense for Naruto to have a special Sun Pokémon dedicated to his two favorite girls.

Sunflora, the “Sun Pokémon,” is a happy little sunflower with the brightest smile. Although it has a very gentle and simple appearance, Sunflora can catch its opponent off guard with its natural ability to thrive under the sun. As opposed to nighttime where it is unable to function or move, the sun greatly enhances the speed and power output of the otherwise harmless Sunflora. In a way, this is similar to how Hinata and Himawari both give off gentle vibes but can actually cause some serious destruction with their Byakugan. Having a Sunflora around would remind Naruto how lucky he is to have such kind and tough ladies in his life.

2 Greninja

As mentioned before, Naruto is a ninja commonly associated with toads. There are multiple amphibian-inspired Pokémon out there like Venusaur, Seismitoad, Toxicroak, and Politoed. There are multiple ninja-inspired Pokémon like Ninjask, Raboot, and Accelgor. However, there is only one Pokémon with the features of both an amphibian and a ninja, just like Naruto.

Greninja, the one-of-a-kind amphibian-ninja hybrid, is quite possibly the best Pokémon counterpart to Naruto himself. Just as Naruto creates his signature Rasenshuriken out of the standard Rasengan, Greninja creates its own shuriken out of water to barrage its opponent with. Although their shuriken attacks appear similar, Naruto’s wind chakra nature and Greninja’s water typing go hand in hand when dealing with opponents of other natures and types. In addition, if their bond is strong enough, they may even be able to achieve the “Bond Phenomenon” like Ash Ketchum and his Greninja.

1 Ninetales

The entire Naruto series is based around a young ninja with a demonic fox spirit sealed within him after it caused mass destruction of the Hidden Leaf Village. But, despite the Nine-Tailed Fox’s reputation as a murderous beast, Kurama actually turned out to be a strong and reliable ally to his jinchuriki, Naruto. Together, they defied the taboo that haunted them by proving to the village that they fight for peace, not destruction.

The perfect Pokémon version of Kurama is, of course, his fellow nine-tailed fox, Ninetales. While Kurama appears more aggressive and menacing, Ninetales is much more elegant and majestic in both its Kantonian and Alolan forms. Regardless of how they appear, both Kurama and Ninetales are serious threats on the battlefield. As Kurama lends his beastly power and chakra to Naruto from within the boy’s body, Ninetales would fight right alongside Naruto with fire or ice, depending on its form.
