Mornings on Earth are nothing short of beautiful, but NASA’s Perseverance rover just revealed what they look like on Mars. It’s safe to say that our Solar System is a genuinely fascinating place. The perfect positioning of Earth and the Sun allows life to thrive on the planet. Gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn are alien worlds unlike anything humans have ever experienced. There are also planets like Mercury and Pluto that are just small balls of rock hurtling through space.

Among those, one member of the Solar System that’s proven endlessly fascinating is Mars. Mars is often the subject of whimsical science-fiction stories, but it’s also a very real target for astronomers and scientists. Numerous robots have explored the planet over the years, NASA wants to send the first humans to Mars in the 2030s, and there’s a dream of people eventually living there.

One robot currently traversing the Red Planet is Perseverance. Perseverance has been touring Mars since it landed there in February — and it’s been extremely busy ever since. In between collecting rock samples and exploring new areas of the planet, Perseverance regularly captures and shares photos of its journies. One of the rover’s latest pictures (seen above) was just uploaded early in the morning on December 10. Similar to so many of Perseverance’s other pictures, it reveals a sight that’s nothing short of jaw-dropping. It offers an incredible view of Mars’ rolling dunes, numerous rocks scattered about the surface, and its alien yellow sky. The picture is accompanied by a message from Perseverance, saying, “Good morning from Mars — where as usual it’s dusty, cold, and strangely serene.”

Mornings On Mars Can Look Very Different

As Perseverance has previously shown, however, mornings on Mars don’t always look like this. Other times, they can appear rather spooky. Perseverance captured the above photo on September 26 — offering a much different view of a Mars morning. Gone is the clam dusty landscape and strangely pleasing yellow sky. In its place are the silhouettes of jagged rocks, a creepy green sky, and an unsettling view of the Sun.

Contrasting photos like this are always fun. Far too often, people think Mars is a boring, unchanging planet with nothing of visual interest. As pictures like this reveal, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sometimes, Mars looks calm, serene, and beautiful. Other times, the planet looks imposing and haunting. No matter which appearance Mars chooses on any given day, it always creates a sight worth gawking over.
