The Last of Us Part 2 has just celebrated its first anniversary, marking a whole year since the controversial Naughty Dog sequel first launched on PlayStation 4. To honor the occasion, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann penned an open letter to fans, which appears to suggest the development team is now working on multiple new projects.

The original The Last of Us first released two console generations ago, coming to PlayStation 3 in June 2013. The game then released for PS4 in the form of The Last of Us Remastered, launching just a year after the PS3 version of the game. Fans of Joel and Ellie’s emotional journey were treated to The Last of Us Part 2 in May 2020, though the game quickly became one of the most divisive titles in video game history. Between the death of a certain character, and the introduction of the new playable character Abby, gamers were left either loving or hating the sequel. Despite the divide in opinion, sales of The Last of Us Part 2 broke multiple records for Sony, and the game currently has the most Game of The Year Awards of any video game ever released. A year after launch, it looks as though The Last of Us universe is set to expand, according to Druckmann himself.

In an anniversary blog post on the official Naughty Dog website [via PlayStation Universe], director Druckmann penned an open letter to fans, thanking them for their support for The Last of Us Part 2. While the post is more appreciative than informative, Druckmann did confirm Naughty Dog is working on its “next set” of games, signing off the post with: “On behalf of everyone that worked on The Last of Us Part II, thank you! We love you! And as we work on our next set of games, know that your support continues to fuel us!” While it’s not known for sure just what the studio has up its sleeve, a sensible bet would be the rumored remake of 2013’s The Last of Us, and the standalone multiplayer game for The Last of Us Part 2.

Rumors of a remake of the first The Last of Us began earlier this year, when Bloomberg reported that Naughty Dog planned to rebuild the game from the ground up. While the idea of The Last of Us recreated in the same engine as the second game excites many players, others feel a remake is unnecessary at this point in the game’s lifecycle. As for The Last of Us Part 2’s multiplayer mode, job listings seem to suggest the standalone mode is coming, but details other than this are sparse.

TLOU fans already have the HBO series to look forward to, which is set to star Pedro Pascal as Joel, and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. The duo will star in the six-part drama, alongside Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Merle Dandridge as Marlene. Dandridge also played Marlene in the video game, making her a particularly great choice for the TV series. HBO’s The Last of Us doesn’t yet have a release date, though filming began earlier this year.

Players may have loved or hated The Last of Us Part 2, but regardless of opinion, whatever Naughty Dog is working on is sure to be another hit for Sony.
