Locke & Key, based on the popular comic book series written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, has taken a long journey from page to screen. Back in 2011, a pilot was made for Fox, but it never made it to series. A few years later, Universal announced a trilogy of films, but it never saw the light of day. Then, Hulu picked up Locke & Key, but its 2017 pilot was never picked up for series. But in 2018, the long-anticipated adaptation finally found its home at Netflix.

The show chronicles the Locke siblings, attempting to pick up the pieces after their father’s murder. Their mom decides to relocate their family to her husband’s ancestral home, which the Locke siblings discover a house full of magical keys and mysterious secrets, that seem to be connected to their dad’s death. They search for the truth while trying to protect the keys from a demon who will stop at nothing to have them.

Locke & Key’s cast is quite the ensemble. Many actors and actresses in the cast have had appeared in notable television shows, and a few have made it to the big screen. Here’s a complete cast and character guide for season one of Locke & Key.

Locke & Key’s Main Cast & Characters

Jackson Robert Scott as Bode Locke — The youngest Locke kid finds the first couple of keys around his family’s new home and introduces his brother and sister to their magic. As Bode appears to have the strongest connection to the keys, he is primarily Dodge’s target as she attempts to hunt them all down. Scott is best known for his role as Georgie in 2017’s It.

Emilia Jones as Kinsey Locke — Kinsey, the middle Locke kid, struggles with some major PTSD after the events of her father’s murder. That guilt haunts her until she uses the Head Key to take the fear out of her head, turning her into a more reckless person. She enters into a love triangle with Scot and Gabe. Jones has appeared in High-Rise and Brimstone.



Connor Jessup as Tyler Locke — Tyler is the older brother to Bode and Kinsey, along with being the most hesitant of his siblings to the keys’ magic. Tyler struggles with his anger and his newly self-assigned role as the man of the house. Jessup is probably best known for appearing in American Crime.

Darby Stanchfield as Nina Locke — The Locke family matriarch tries to keep it together for her kids after her husband’s murder. She also discovers that Rendell might have been keeping secrets from her, and that Ellie Whedon may still be keeping those secrets for Rendell. Nina’s struggle with alcoholism haunts her as she attempts to heal from Rendell’s death and cope with the strange goings on in the house. Stanchfield is best known for her role as Abby Whelan on ABC’s Scandal.

Laysla De Oliveira as Dodge — Dodge is a demon who appears to be tied to the keys. She tries to trick the Locke siblings into handing them over. Eventually, it is revealed that Dodge is actually the ghostly echo of Rendell’s childhood best friend, Lucas, who wants to control all keys to re-join the land of the living. The Lockes believe they threw Dodge/Lucas through the Black Door in the season finale. But the last scene of the finale shows the antagonist has survived and taken on the form of Gabe. De Oliveira appeared in Netflix’s In The Tall Grass.

Bill Heck as Rendell Locke — Rendell is the Locke family patriarch, whose murder kicks off the events of this series. He and his friends used the keys as kids, and they eventually lead to some of their tragic deaths. After his death, his family moves back to his ancestral home and begin to discover secrets from his mysterious past. His children see the keys as their legacy. Heck has appeared in The Alienist and The Leftovers.

Thomas Mitchell Barnet as Sam Lesser — Sam is a troubled student of Rendell’s who murders him in cold blood, after accosting him with questions about the Locke house. Barnet appeared in Run This Town.


Aaron Ashmore as Duncan Locke — Duncan is Rendell’s younger brother who has lost all memories of using the key with Rendell when they were kids. Ashmore appeared in Smallville, Killjoys, and Veronica Mars.

Sherri Saum as Ellie Whedon — Ellie is a childhood friend of Rendell’s and the mother of Rufus. She is the only surviving member of the original Keepers of the Keys. She helped Rendell to cover up their friends’ death at the hand of a possessed Lucas. Before the events of this season, Ellie uses the Echo Key to bring back the decreased Lucas. Ellie eventually betrays Lucas and attempts to help the Lockes. But, due to a case of mistaken identity by way of the Identity Key, the Lockes through her through the Black Door. Saum has appeared in Facebook’s Limetown and The Fosters.

Griffin Gluck as Gabe — Gabe is the eventual boyfriend of Kinsey. In the season finale, it is revealed that Gabe was really just Lucas in disguise, by means of the Identity Key. Gluck has appeared in Just Go With It.

Coby Bird as Rufus Whedon — Rufus is Ellie’s son who works on the Key House grounds and befriends Bode. Bird has appeared in an episode of The Good Doctor.

Petrice Jones as Scot — Scot works the local ice cream shop and takes a quick liking to Kinsey. Jones appeared in Netflix’s iBoy.

Genevieve Kang as Jackie Veda — Jackie is a girl at school who Tyler develops a crush on. Kang has appeared in Impulse and Shadowhunters.

Hallea Jones as Eden Hawkins — Early in the season, Eden is the bully that torments Kinsey at school. By the end, Eden and Kinsey make amends and become friendly. When the Black Door is open in the season finale, Eden is hit with an element from the other side, possessing her just as it did Lucas years earlier. The last shot of the episode sees her now working with Gabe (AKA Lucas). Jones has appeared in Netflix’s Let it Snow.
