Netflix’s Sex Education was one of the most surprising hit TV shows of 2019. It followed the central character, teenager Otis Milburn, as he navigated the ups and downs of his sexual awakening in a funny and cringeworthy way. However, the show also managed to include a lot of warmth and heart, which is why fans cannot wait for the third season.

It also managed to include a whole rostra of LGBTQ+ relationships and what’s more, it made them integral to the plot. Otis’s best friend, Eric Effiong, found himself in a difficult position in Season 2, having to choose between Adam Groff and Rahim.

10 Adam – They Genuinely Have Fun Together

Adam hasn’t exactly had the easiest upbringing of all the characters on Sex Education. His father, Michael Groff, is the headmaster of Moordale Secondary School and a bit of a bully to boot, in both his personal and professional life. For a long time, Adam didn’t know how to be himself and just have fun.

When he realized he was attracted to Eric, after he came back from military school, he and Eric began to sneak out at night to talk and to smash bottles. The fact that Adam was able to release his inner frustration without hurting someone, and enjoy it with someone who didn’t hate him spoke volumes.

9 Rahim – He And Eric Were Adorable Together

When Rahim first strolled down the corridors of Moordale School, almost every student was obsessed with him, and for good reason. He was quiet, and yet he exuded a calm confidence that was instantaneously attractive. Eric was no exception. Unlike everyone else, though, Rahim took a special liking to him.

The two boys started going out and seeing each other and honestly, it was one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever seen. They complimented each other perfectly and appeared to be genuinely happy in each other’s company. If it weren’t for Adam, they could have gone the mile.

8 Adam – Their Chemistry Is Amazing

Like, seriously, their chemistry together is off the charts. Back in Season 1, Adam and Eric were forced to spend detention together. At this point in the series, they didn’t particularly like each other very much (more of that to come) so this detention was something that neither of them were looking forward to.

However, after Eric became frustrated with Adam’s utter selfishness, he confronted him, leading to a small scuffle, ending with Adam sitting on top of Eric. And then they kissed. Eric was shocked, but for the rest of the episode, the chemistry between the two men was utterly electric.

7 Rahim – He Encouraged Eric To Become More Confident

Eric has been through a lot in just two seasons of the show. In Season 1, he was already happy with his sexuality but struggled to find a boyfriend. Due to Otis’s sex clinic, the friends drifted apart and this had a massive impact on Eric’s confidence, especially when he was the victim of a nasty homophobic assault.

In the series’s second season, Eric started dating Rahim, who was seen as desirable by the whole school. The fact that Rahim fancied Eric highlighted just how confident Eric had become in a matter of months. Rahim always offered words of support and encouragement to Eric, like an amazing boyfriend.

6 Adam – Eric’s Family Liked Him

Going out with a new boyfriend or girlfriend for the first time can be slightly daunting. What’s even more nerve wracking is when your partner meets your family for the very first time. Often, you’re close to your family and so you do take into account what they think of your new beau.

When Eric’s family first met Rahim, they went to church together, and while Rahim was completely polite and open about his views, Eric’s family (especially his mom) didn’t really connect with Rahim. When they met Adam however, they clearly took to him from the very start, as they were all smiles.

5 Rahim – He Is Mature And Is Sexually Confident

Otis Milburn is the star of Sex Education, as the whole series revolves around him and his setting up of a sex clinic in his high school. During the clinic, Otis gives out advice to people who have problems of a sexual nature, be it their sexuality, strange and varied kinks, or even cases of impotence.

To this day, however, the one thing that Otis was seemingly unable to solve was Anwar’s douching problem. Anwar was worried about preparing to have sex with his boyfriend but only Rahim could set his mind to rest, with both some practical and more personal advice. Eric couldn’t do any better.

4 Adam – Eric Makes Adam A Better Person

As previously mentioned, Adam was a bit of a rough diamond back in Season 1. He was, to put it mildly, not a very nice person. At all, in fact. He bullied Eric constantly and he caused his then-girlfriend Aimee to break up with him by indecently exposing himself to a whole crowd of students during lunchtime.

When Eric and Adam started going out in secret, though, Adam’s attitude gradually began to change. Eric brought out the softer, more vulnerable side to Adam, and it made him a nicer person for it. Of course, he still messed up but having someone to share the bad times with made Adam a more kinder person.

3 Rahim – Adam Bullied Eric

This is the big one, essentially. For almost the entirety of Season 1, Eric fell victim to Adam’s internalized homophobia. Adam would pick on Eric day in, day out, and it was clear from the start that this wasn’t a recent thing; Adam’s bullying had been going on for years.

Granted, Adam was extremely conflicted and had no one to talk to about his problems, or his sexuality, but his isolation was partly his fault. Adam targeted Eric because he was envious of Eric’s freedom. Rahim, on the other hand, was gentle and compassionate for the entirety of his relationship with Eric.

2 Adam – The School Play

Awww. Adam’s big defining moment. Adam had seriously struggled with his sexuality for the first two seasons of Sex Education. He also handled the struggle really, really badly in the beginning. Of course, Adam’s bully of a father didn’t particularly help matters much.

During the show’s second season, Adam became a more likeable person as viewers really got to see the man behind the mask, so to speak. Adam was just an incredibly tormented soul who was just incredibly lonely. He finally achieved vindication, however, when he outed himself and asked out Eric publicly at the end of the school play.

1 Rahim – He Challenged Eric

No one wants a relationship that’s easy. It might be nice and sweet at the beginning, but if your partner agrees with everything you say and do then the relationship becomes boring incredibly quickly, and one or both partners will lose interest sooner rather than later. That’s why we say opposites attract.

Every single one of us is entitled to our own opinion, and Rahim knows this. In the series, Rahim isn’t religious by any means, but his boyfriend, Eric, is. Rahim seems genuinely interested to accompany Eric to church and asks questions about Eric’s faith that challenge him, but in a good way.
