Netflixs Warrior Nun Cast Character & Comic Comparison Guide

Netflix’s new action fantasy series Warrior Nun stars Alba Baptista as Ava, a quadriplegic orphan who is given a second chance at life after an angelic halo is embedded in her back, giving her superpowers. While Ava wants nothing more than to enjoy her newfound freedom, a secret sect of nuns wants her to embrace her destiny as the Warrior Nun and battle the demons that are crawling up from hell. Warrior Nun is based on the Warrior Nun Areala comics by Ben Dunn, and several of the show’s cast members play characters lifted from the comics.

Warrior Nun was adapted for TV by Simon Barry (Van Helsing) and features a cast primarily made up of newcomers and international actors. The series is set in Spain, where is also where it was filmed. Season 1 focuses not only on Ava’s origin story as the Warrior Nun, but also on a battle of control for the holy metal Divinium, which tech billionaire Jillian Salvius (Thekla Reuten) plans to use to open up a quantum portal that could lead straight to Hell.

While only very loosely based on the comic books, with most of the characters being created for the series, Warrior Nun does have a number of familiar names from the Warrior Nun Areala comics. Here’s a guide to who plays who in the Netflix show, and which characters also appear in the comics.

Warrior Nun’s Main Cast & Characters

Netflixs Warrior Nun Cast Character & Comic Comparison Guide

  • Alba Baptista as Ava – An original character created to lead the TV show. Ava became quadriplegic at the age of seven, in a car accident that killed her mother. Left helpless and without parents, she was raised in an orphanage run by nuns.
  • Toya Turner as Shotgun Mary – One of the main characters from the Warrior Nun Areala comic books, Shotgun Mary gets her name from the twin shotguns that she carries and uses as her primary weapons. Mary is an outsider within the Order of the Cruciform Sword, fighting alongside them but non considering herself to be a nun.
  • Lorena Andrea as Sister Lilith – The next in line to be the Halo Bearer, before fate intervened and gave the relic to Ava. Lilith is not happy about having her heritage stolen. The comics also feature a character called Lillith, who is a demon princess.
  • Emilio Sakraya as J.C. – Another original character created for the TV series, J.C. is a free spirit who left home to wander around Europe after the death of his mother. Ava ends up falling for him after he rescues her from drowning.
  • Kristina Tonteri-Young as Sister Beatrice – Sent away to a Catholic boarding school by her parents, Sister Beatrice has since become one of the Order of the Cruciform Sword’s most skilled fighters. Sister Beatrice doesn’t appear in the comics.
  • Tristán Ulloa as Father Vincent – The leader of the Order of the Cruciform Sword, who fights in Ava’s corner when others argue that the halo should be taken away from her. Father Vincent appears to be loosely based on Father Terrance Gomez, a character who trains the warrior nuns in the comics.
  • Thekla Reuten as Jillian Salvius – A tech company owner who plans to use Divinium to build a quantum portal. Jillian is a gender-swapped version of a character in the comics called Julian Salvius, who is an arms-dealer and Satan-worshipper.

Warrior Nun’s Supporting Cast & Characters

  • Melina Matthews as Sister Shannon – In the Warrior Non Areala comics, Sister Shannon Matthews is the main character. There’s no halo in the comics, but instead a chosen Warrior Nun in each generation who becomes the human avatar of the angel Areala. In Netflix’s Warrior Nun, Shannon dies in the first episode and Ava inherits the halo from her.
  • Joaquin de Almeida as Cardinal Duretti – An agent of the Vatican who will stop at nothing to keep Jillian Salvius from using the Divinium for her own purposes. Cardinal Duretti has little faith in Ava’s ability to be the Halo Bearer. There’s no character called Cardinal Duretti in the comics, though he may be an amalgam of the characters Cardinal Shoc and Cardinal Stark.
  • Sylvia de Fanti as Mother Superion – A former fighting nun herself, who has the scars to prove her service, Mother Superion now leads the Order of the Cruciform Sword with Father Vincent. Mother Superion appears in the comics, where she is blind and wears thick goggles to cover her eyes.
  • Olivia Delcán as Sister Camila – A younger recruit to the Order of the Cruciform Sword, who finds that her duties are not quite what she expected.
  • May Simón Lifschitz as Chanel – One of J.C.’s partners in crime, who helps Ava out of a fashion crisis (or, arguably, into one).
  • Dimitri Abold as Randall – Another of J.C.’s friends who travels around with him.
  • Charlotte Vega as Zori – The final member of J.C.’s group, who isn’t happy about having Ava around.
