Then in July, rumors emerged that Apple is prepping a version of the Pro Display XDR that will come equipped with the A13 SoC, the same chip that powers the iPhone 11 series. Save for the pricey Pro Display XDR, Apple hasn’t launched a standalone monitor since the discontinuation of its Thunderbolt Display lineup. Apple’s next monitor was also touted to come equipped with a GPU unit. It now appears that Apple’s jampacked product portfolio for 2022 might very well include a few external monitors.
Leakster Dylandkt, who maintains a fairly accurate track record with predictions about unreleased Apple products, has now shared some information about a trio of in-development external monitors. Made by LG, there are three sizes currently on the design table — 24-inch, 27-inch, and 32-inch. The leaker further adds that the two of the panels share the same specifications as the 24-inch M1-powered iMac and the rumored 27-inch iMac upgrade that is slated to debut next year. The 32-inch model is said to be an improved version of the Pro Display monitor that Apple launched alongside its cheesegrater Mac Pro a while ago.
Thread 2/4: The other display seems to be an improved 32 inch Pro Display XDR. Despite the lack of branding, It can be assumed at the very least that this display will be Apple branded.
Apple’s 2022 Lineup Looks Crowded
Another common trait between the leaked 27-inch and 32-inch panels is the 120Hz refresh rate tech, something Apple markets as ProMotion. Apple’s implementation has provided automatic refresh rate adjustment, which means the refresh rate varies between 24Hz and 120Hz based on on-screen content. And finally, the leakster also links an Apple silicon to the 32-inch external display. However, it is unclear if it refers to an M-series chip or something else. For reference, the current-gen Pro Display XDR comes kitted with different in-house silicon that Apple calls a timing controller (TCON) chip. As per an official product page, the TCON chip is used to “precisely control high-speed modulation of both 20.4 million LCD pixels and 576 LEDs in backlight for seamless synchronization.” This particular variant will likely debut alongside the Mac Pro refresh next year, given the first Pro Display XDR tagged alongside the cheesegrater model back in 2019.
