Starbreeze recently held a livestream to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its Payday series. During the stream, the developer revealed new details on the long-awaited Payday 3, including the game’s location, where it fits within the series’ timeline, and the return of some familiar faces. Fans were also treated to a first look at some of the concept art for the upcoming sequel.

The new details for Payday 3 reveal that the game is set place primarily in New York City. The game’s director, Erik Wonnevi, explained that the game’s version of the city would be an “enormous representation of the [actual] city”. He also discussed the decision to shift the game into a sprawling cityscape like New York saying, “we’re really trying to take the game into this big-scale urban environment”, as this would allow the team to “immerse players in this fantasy of being at the heart of a living, breathing city”.

It was also revealed that the story for Payday 3 will take place several years after the events of Payday 2 and will see the return of Payday’s original four characters: Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf. Coming out of retirement, the characters will have to change things up as the world has moved into a “digital age”. The developer explained a bit about what this means for the gang as they face a world with “software giants, crypto currencies, mass surveillance, and the Dark Web”. These new forces will have an impact on the gang’s new gadgets, challenges, and opportunities.

While there was no gameplay for Starbreeze to show off just yet, the developer did offer several pieces of concept art that offer a glimpse at the character models and the environments players will find themselves in when the game finally launches.

While Payday 3 is not expected until sometime in 2023, the fact that it is even happening at all is a miracle. After almost going out of business back in 2019, Starbreeze can produce this sequel thanks to a publishing deal with Koch Media. The deal, which occurred back in March, will completely fund Payday 3 and will see the title launch on both PC and consoles.
