The people who want to try out the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons but are unsure of where to start will soon have an easy way to pick up the game, as a new board game that simplifies the rules of the tabletop RPG is being released by Hasbro.

The previous editions of Dungeons & Dragons have included their own variations on a starter set, which is usually a boxed game with counters, dice, maps, pre-made characters, and scenarios that gradually introduce players to the different rules of the game. The current edition of Dungeons & Dragons has its own starter set with a mini-campaign called the Lost Mine of Phandelver.

There will soon be an even more structured and simplified version of the Dungeons & Dragons rules available on the market. According to Dicebreaker, a board game called Dungeons & Dragons: Adventurer’s Gate was spotted at the Asmodee UK stand at the 2020 Toy Fair in London. Its general description matches a similar item announced by Hasbro called Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Begins, which is a board game that teaches people how to play Dungeons & Dragons with the aid of simplified rules.

Along with various starter sets, there have also been a number of Dungeons & Dragons board games released over the years. These have included adaptations of recent campaigns released by Wizards of the Coast, such as Tomb of Annihilation. The fact that Wizards of the Coast are owned by Hasbro has made the process of adapting the campaigns into board games a lot easier.

The Dungeons & Dragons-style of tabletop RPG lends itself well to board games, so it’s no surprise that more are on the way. Dungeons & Dragons has seen an explosion in popularity over the past few years thanks to streaming shows that have demonstrated how the game works. There are still some concepts in Dungeons & Dragons that can be tricky to explain and some people might be turned off from learning about a game if all of the rules are dumped on them at once. The existence of a board game like Dungeons & Dragons: Adventurer’s Gate can help slowly introduce the concepts and rules of the game in a way that is easy to digest and can make players eager to learn more about the grander scope of the full version of the tabletop RPG.
