Whether Barry Allen or Wally West is wearing the costume, the Flash’s history is packed with some of the most iconic covers in comics, from Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson’s endlessly homaged ‘Flash of Two Worlds!’ art to Brian Bolland’s string of trippy masterpieces. But even the biggest Flash fan hasn’t seen everything, especially when it comes to top-tier fan art.

The Flash is uniquely placed to inspire amazing art. A character built on the premise of breakneck speed, Flash’s powers allow him to travel the multiverse by vibrating in sync with other realities. No other character has such immediate access to different time periods and alien worlds, all while beset by villains like Mirror Master, Weather Wizard, and Captain Cold, who are capable of conjuring up whatever vistas an artist wants to tackle next.

New art from comic illustrator Drew Moss, shared to Twitter, focuses on Flash himself. Using just two colors, the Scarlet Speedster is pictured crackling with energy and the promise of motion to come. An artist who has worked with Oni Press, IDW, Image Comics, and Dark Horse on projects like Terrible Lizard, The Colonized, Copperhead, and Creepy, Moss also sells character portraits of pop culture figures, including Marvel and DC superheroes, as well as mash-up art like a recent Ghost Rider/Buzz Lightyear crossover.

Moss’ art brings to mind the work of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, with the focus on stark, insistent colors seen on the cover of Flash vol. 4 #22, but with a similar composition to Flash vol. 4 #1. With an almost devilish expression, Flash’s yellow eyes convey that the rippling energy is coming from within him, communicating the sheer power of his connection to the Speed Force. Flash isn’t merely fast, but connected to an extra-dimensional energy source which alters his relationship to the vibrational planes that make up reality. This allows for the aforementioned ability to travel through time and between dimensions, but also to phase through solid matter and generate an “Infinite Mass Punch” capable of matching or even exceeding Superman’s strength. Recently sought out by Darkseid for his potential to shatter the multiverse itself, Flash is a peerless dynamo – a fact that’s conveyed as well in Moss’ art as in any DC cover that’s yet seen print.

Depicting otherworldly abilities is an impressive feat, but to do so with only two colors is particularly commendable. Moss’ Flash crackles with both energy and purpose, earning comparisons to modern comic great Jorge Jimenez from fans on Twitter. It’s clear that both at DC and in fan art, Flash’s era of amazing covers has yet to end, as the Fastest Man Alive continues to inspire experimentation and excellence.
