The gang in 4D still has our hearts ten years later. But in retrospect, some storylines and parts of New Girl make absolutely no sense.

New Girl celebrated its 10-year anniversary in September 2021, and viewers still love the show as much as they did in 2011. With the help of streaming, New Girl even gained an entirely new base of Gen Z fans with its quirky, hilarious, and lovable ensemble of characters.

With the hit show running for seven seasons, minor character differences and set inconsistencies are bound to occur. However, diehard fans have noticed some major plot holes throughout the series that raise some major questions about the show and its characters.

Winston, Schmidt, and Nick’s College

Since episode two of the series, it is established that Winston played basketball in college and then played professionally in college. It is also well known that Nick and Schmidt were roommates in college. In flashbacks throughout the series, it is implied that Winston attended Rutgers University and Nick and Schmidt went to Syracuse University.

However, in the seventh series of the show, Nick talks about how he drove eight hours across the country to visit Winston at college. Syracuse and Rutgers are only four hours apart, definitely not across the country. So where exactly did the men attend college?

Taylor Swift

From wanting to listen to her music alone to worrying about her living in New York, the musician is frequently mentioned. Taylor even makes a cameo in the episode Elaine’s Big Day, where she runs off with CeCe’s groom.

Since Taylor is mentioned so often, it’s odd that the gang did not notice that Elaine looked awfully like Taylor Swift. It is even stranger that the show continues to mention Taylor Swift after the unlikely appearance of the singer.

Caroline’s Personality Switch

Fans were introduced to Caroline in episode one, learning that Nick was still hung up on her. Towards the end of the first season, Nick and Caroline get back together and nearly move in together.

During the first season, Caroline is kind and friendly, and even puts up with Nick prank-calling her. She says she only broke up with Nick due to his lack of affection. However, when she returns after Nick and Jess start dating, suddenly she is wild and unpredictable, in complete opposition to her behavior in season 1.

Schmidt’s Mother and CeCe Meeting

At the end of season 4, Schmidt’s mother visits a nail salon to relax after having an argument with Schmidt, where she runs into CeCe, who is avoiding Jess’s antics.

The two chat and give each other advice, never revealing their shared connection. Louise even quips that she would introduce CeCe to her single son but can’t because CeCe isn’t Jewish. CeCe remarks that it doesn’t matter because she is still in love with her ex (Schmidt). However, this interaction is never mentioned again despite the two having scenes together after CeCe and Schmidt get engaged.

Jess’s First Time

The story of Jess losing her virginity is a major turning point in the show. After saying Teddy, the firefighter who she lost her virginity to, took her by surprise and she didn’t have to think about it, Nick goes to Jess and tells her the same, taking their relationship from flirtation to more. Jess slept with Teddy after a fraught attempt to lose her virginity to another man.

Despite this, in a flashback in season 1, Jess tells CeCe she is not a virgin anymore after realizing what third base is, not the deliberate situation Jess describes in season 2. So who did Jess actually lose her virginity to?

Nick’s Finances

After The Pepperwood Chronicles become a hit in season 7, Nick is suddenly portrayed as rich. He can afford to loan thousands of dollars to Coach for his restaurant, financially support an unemployed Jess, and pay for a four-bedroom loft in downtown Los Angeles.

However, it is extremely unlikely a first-time author would make that much money for a debut novel. Additionally, in previous seasons it is mentioned that Nick is not financially stable and is in debt. There’s no way he would be able to be that wealthy after a single novel.

Jess’s Weight

While Schmidt’s weight loss is a major character trait throughout the series, creators gave Jess a similar storyline in the beginning. In the early seasons, Jess tells Schmidt her weight gain was due to her eating habits.

Flashbacks show her as chubbier than her peers, especially in comparison to CeCe. However, writers seemed to abandon that storyline in later seasons of the show, where flashbacks show her as a thin child, definitely not the larger child they showed in early seasons.

No Nail Oath

After Nick kisses Jess in season two, Schmidt reveals that the men in the loft signed a “No Nail Oath”, agreeing that they all wouldn’t pursue anything romantic with Jess. Schmidt is deeply upset that Nick broke this promise, and shares a kiss with Jess to make up for the rule-breaking.

However, in season one, Schmidt himself tries to kiss Jess after she helps make his birthday special. Why would Schmidt be upset that Nick broke the oath when he nearly did as well?

Schmidt’s Political Views

Throughout the show, Schmidt is a well-known Republican. He pretends to be Mitt Romney’s son, is a big fan of Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, and teases Jess and CeCe for their Democratic views.

However, in season 7, it is revealed that he and CeCe named their daughter Ruth Bader Parekh-Schmidt, after the famously liberal judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, contrary to Schmidt’s established political beliefs. While it is possible CeCe came up with the name, it seems very out of character for the controlling Schmidt to go against his strong political beliefs.

CeCe’s Fertility

CeCe’s fertility issues are a huge storyline in season 2. She is told she would have to start trying for kids immediately if she wanted them. It pushes her and Schmidt apart and leads her to nearly marry Shivrang.

However, in season 6 she and Schmidt get pregnant without much discussion of her fertility issues. Then, in season 7 the pair talk about getting pregnant again with no acknowledgment of a potential problem. Since the seventh season jumps three years in time, it would be seven years since CeCe was told she would need to get pregnant immediately. The finale shows them having another child, despite the fertility issues that were a big plot point.
