Over the course of seven seasons of New Girl, Jess, though she has immature tendencies, is always seen as a little bit smarter than the rest of her friends. She’s someone who always has to correct people when she thinks she’s right, but that doesn’t mean Jess is always the smartest person in the room. In fact, her best friend Cece doesn’t just have sarcastic quotes in her repertoire. She’s much smarter than the other characters give her credit for.

To Jess’ credit, one of the reasons she has such a hard time with Cece having made the decision to drop out of high school so many years ago is because she believes Cece “is so smart.” Jess has a hard time reconciling her friend with what she thinks a model is like. The series doesn’t always showcase that, but when it does, the audience should pay attention.

10 Cece Could Have Handled The Car Show

In the episode “Models,” Cece and Jess get into an argument on Cece’s birthday after Jess accidentally calls Cece dumb. Jess tries to apologize, but Cece has a modeling job to get to that she’s too hungover to do the next morning.

Jess decides to step in so that Cece doesn’t get in trouble with the agency. She, and the audience, are given a crash course in how difficult a “dumb model” day job can be. Not only does Jess have to memorize the information about a car that she only receives while getting her hair and makeup done, but she has to manage to balance on a spinning platform while in heels and pay attention to all her cues. Jess can’t do it. She can’t even manage the heels, let alone everything else, proving that Cece is able to quickly process a lot of information at once and figure out exactly what to do with it.

9 She Sees Nick As Jess’ Type In Episode 5

New Girl 10 Times Cece Is Smarter Than Others Think

Cece is a lot more observant than her friends realize. She sees that there’s something between Nick and Jess before anyone else starts talking about it.

In the fifth episode of the series, “Cece Crashes,” Cece points out to Jess that not only does she think Nick is interested in Jess, but that Nick is actually Jess’ ideal guy. Nick has all of the qualities that Jess says she wants. Though Cece’s observations put a lot of doubt into Jess’ mind about her friendship with Nick and seems to be put to bed by the end of the episode, Cece isn’t wrong in the end.

8 She Gives Schmidt Advice About His Boss

Also in the first season of the show is proof that Cece understands the power dynamic between Schmidt and his boss with just seeing two conversations between them. She doesn’t hesitate to comment.

It’s Cece who helps Schmidt see that he needs to stand up to his boss because she’s taking advantage of him because she knows that he’ll let her. Cece, again, isn’t wrong. Schmidt and his boss eventually find their footing with one another. Schmidt even has a brief fling with the other woman, though it doesn’t really go anywhere considering Schmidt has his heart set on Cece.

7 Cece Makes Friends With Powerful People

Due to her modeling work, Cece has a lot of connections. She makes friends easily and she spends a lot of time making appearances at their events, especially in the early episodes of New Girl. Cece manages to make friends with quite the eclectic group of people.

In addition to the other models that she lets crash in her apartment on a regular basis, she also points out some pretty powerful friends to Schmidt and Jess. At one point, she tells Schmidt she has at least two contacts in her phone that could get rid of him for her, and at another, she tells Jess she spent her holidays with someone who might be an arms dealer. Those might not seem like good decisions, but it shows that Cece keeps herself in a position to call in favors – even from dangerous people.

6 She Knows When To Step Away From Modeling

Cece gradually spends less time with modeling jobs as part of her storyline. About half-way through the series, she makes the decision to find a new career path. That might seem drastic, but her logic makes perfect sense for her.

Cece starts modeling in high school, excited because she’s going to, “get paid to look pretty,” as she explains in the second season. As she sees herself start to lose out on jobs to slightly younger models, Cece experiences real growth and realizes modeling isn’t going to last forever. She makes the decision to walk away before she’s pushed out completely. Cece might not be a great bartender, but she commits to it – and she commits to finding a new path for herself while she has a steady paycheck.

5 She Gets Her GED

Even though Cece starts working as a teen, she doesn’t see herself as employable in the same ways that Jess and her friends are. Cece, after all, dropped out of high school, and wants potential employers to take her seriously.

Cece decides to buckle down, with Schmidt’s help, to study for her GED. He quizzes her on the kinds of trivia found on high school competency tests that she didn’t pick up while traveling for modeling jobs. Cece doesn’t give up on her own education, even if other people might. She also eventually decides she wants to get a business degree, though that particular plot thread is dropped, so it’s not clear if she makes it that far into her plans.

4 Cece Understands Complicated Modeling Contracts

Thanks to her years as a model, Cece has one impressive skill she’s able to use to change the course of her career: she understands the fine print of modeling contracts.

It’s no secret that most people in the entertainment industry, models, athletes etc. have agents whose job it is to dissect and amend contracts for them. Cece has been around the modeling block enough times that she can do it herself, demonstrated when she picks apart the contract of another model and ends up becoming his manager.

3 She Knows How To Read People

Unlike Jess, Cece is very good at getting what she wants from other people. She’s very good at reading them and figuring out how to manipulate the situation to her advantage. When she meets Schmidt, for example, she understands that she can simply tell him what she’s planning on doing to get him to follow suit. She also sees exactly how to push his buttons when it comes to cooking with him.

Likewise, she understands how to act around Nick when he has a health scare that the rest of his friends can’t handle. She doesn’t just use her abilities to read people to her own advantage, but also to help other people.

2 She’s Not Gullible

New Girl 10 Times Cece Is Smarter Than Others Think

If there’s one advantage Cece Parekh has over the rest of her friends, it’s that she’s never going to believe everything someone tells her. She’s definitely not the most gullible of characters, ready to pick apart what someone is telling her at any time.

Cece always takes Schmidt’s stories with a grain of salt. She also would never have fallen for Walt Miller’s cons in the way that Jess and Winston did. It’s a shame those two characters didn’t get a chance to interact.

1 Cece Learns Her Lesson In Relationships

One hallmark of New Girl is that all of the main characters make a lot of the same mistakes in relationships. Nick goes back to Caroline and frequently refuses to open up to people. Schmidt looks for relationships with his competitive coworkers. Jess refuses to let go of relationships she knows won’t work (Spencer, Paul, and Sam).

Cece, however, doesn’t repeatedly go back to old boyfriends. When someone hurts her, she moves on. Though she casually dates a lot of guys who aren’t good for her when the series begins, each time she learns her lesson and moves on to a new relationship. She even attempts to have her mother set her up with the perfect guy. Her one exception, of course, is Schmidt, but that works out for her in the end.
