Mastery at fighting games generally depend on both button input timing precision to a fraction of a second, as well as complex series of button presses in order to execute combos essential to high-level play. This means that for fighting games more so than virtually any other genre of video game, an appropriate controller is an essential tool. Japanese controller and accessory manufacturer HORI has in recent times become a go-to for controllers designed explicitly for use in fighting games compatible with all major systems. Its latest is an officially-licensed fighting game-oriented controller for the Switch that’s now available in the US, called the Fighting Commander.

The most noticeable functionality added to the Fight Commander is the inclusion of R and ZR buttons alongside the standard A, B, X, and Y buttons. This is designed to make inputting combos that include the right triggers easier, requiring only thumb input rather than the use of extra fingers on trigger buttons. That in turn means that the “left” triggers are on the right side of the controller, meaning that combos requiring their use are executable using only your right hand. Since there are no control sticks on the Fight Commander, control stick button presses are mapped to the triggers on its left side.

Its other key feature, not included on a standard Switch controller, is the inclusion of two toggle switches, one of which can switch between treating the D-pad as the left control stick and right control stick. The other switch changes the function of the triggers so that L and ZL buttons are transferred to the physical left side of the controller for players for whom that’s habitual. The right-side triggers then become its control stick press buttons.

HORI previously released Fighting Commander controllers for the PS4 and Xbox One. Its Switch variant is functionally the same as its predecessors. HORI also previously released arcade sticks and Smash-oriented GameCube controllers for the Switch.

The Switch edition of its Fighting Commander was first released in Japan of May of this year. It’s now out in the US and is available through major retailers of Nintendo products.
