The forthcoming franchise sequel Jason Bourne starring Matt Damon (The Martian) and directed by Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) has been the center of significant attention leading up to its long-awaited theatrical release later this month. Jason Bourne marks Damon’s first time playing the film’s namesake since the release of 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum; the last Bourne film that also featured Greengrass behind the camera, as it were.

Whether or not the aging Bourne will prove to be an unstoppable force the fourth go around in theaters remains to be seen, but everything released thus far certainly paints quiet the thrilling picture of the events soon to unfold in Jason Bourne. However, with Damon flirting with idea of recasting the central role in future franchise installments, the future for the series and iconic hero might be up for debate following the release of Greengrass’ new film.

In the latest clip from Jason Bourne featured above, CIA agent and franchise newcomer Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) and her superior Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) discuss how best to take out Damon’s eponymous rogue agent for good. It certainly looks as though things are about to change in a big way for fans of the action-thriller series of films, and Damon and Greengrass might not be gearing up to come back for another entry even if they were asked to do so. Speaking to The Guardian about making another film involving Bourne, Greengrass remarked:

“I’m not going to make the mistake of saying ‘never’, like I did before. But I’m not going to be sitting around. I’ve got other films to make.”

Those other films no doubt include a forthcoming adaptation of the science-fiction dystopia Nineteen Eighty-Four, a project that has been on the forefront of Greengrass’ mind most recently. As for Damon, the A-list American actor is now 45 years of age, and the extreme demands of getting in peak physical condition to play Bourne might prove to be too demanding going down the road. Having already wrapped production on the upcoming Downsizing by director Alexander Payne (The Descendants), which Damon describes as a social satire that is “the absolute opposite” of Jason Bourne, the actor explained his feelings on the franchise as follows:

“My guess is it will be a while before we’ll even get around to doing another one. They might reboot me before I bow out.”

Whether or not a Jason Bourne reboot will eventually be in the offing or not will hinge on how well Greengrass’ new movie fares at the box office. Given the tepid reception received by The Bourne Legacy in 2012 (a film that neither Damon nor Greengrass worked on), such an outcome might not be the first choice on anyone’s mind at this point in time. If everything falls into place, the new movie starring Damon as Bourne will prove a more than worthy successor to the original trilogy of films, regardless of whether or not it will be the last movie with the same actor in the lead role.
