It seems that Game Freak had more plans for Generation I than fans ever realized, as a new leak suggests that a Pokémon Pink was planned at one point and that it would act as a companion game to Pokémon Yellow.

The first generation of Pokémon games have an odd history. Pokémon Red & Green were the first games released in Japan, which were followed by an updated version called Pokémon Blue, which fixed a lot of the glitches and improved the artwork of the game. The Japanese version of Pokémon Blue formed the basis for the international versions of Pokémon Red & Blue. These were followed by Pokémon Yellow, which had a storyline that was closer to the anime and gave the player a more in-depth starter Pokémon, in the form of Pikachu.

There have been new Pokémon leaks on 4Chan, which include the source codes for Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow. According to Dr. Lava’s Lost Pokémon Twitter account, the source code for Pokémon Yellow references another game called Pokémon Pink, which was meant to be connected to Pokémon Yellow.

There are two main candidates for the cover Pokémon of Pokémon Pink, which would likely have also been an expanded companion in the same way that Pikachu was in Pokémon Yellow. The fact that a Jigglypuff was a recurring character in the Pokémon anime suggests that it would have been the star of Pokémon Pink. There is also the possibility that the game could have focused on Clefairy. The creators of Pokémon once toyed with the idea of Clefairy being the face of the franchise before that role was given to Pikachu. A Clefairy was the star of the Pocket Monsters manga, which is the oldest non-video game piece of Pokémon media. It’s possible that the people at Game Freak wanted to give Clefairy a starring role in the video games as well.

It’s unclear why Pokémon Pink was scrapped. It’s possible that the developers were concerned about a backlash against another set of companion games, as that was a criticism that was levied at Pokémon Red & Green/Blue. The popularity of Pikachu compared to that of Clefairy/Jigglypuff might have also made them reconsider the need for a second game, as Pokémon Pink would have underperformed in comparison to Pokémon Yellow. It seems that Pokémon Pink was scrapped at an early point in development, which is why it has never been discussed before this leak. It’s exciting to think that there are still secrets regarding the early generations of Pokémon games that keep making their way online and we can only wonder what will be revealed in the future.
