Mii Fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate celebrate games that Smash’s developers weren’t able to make full-fledged fighters. As such, some Mii Fighter announcements are met with community disappointment, while others reach into unexpected realms of gaming and are greeted with genuine surprise. The four Mii Fighters which comprise Smash Bros.’s tenth Mii costume DLC include characters from both categories.

The #10 costumes are Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia, the Dragonborn from Skyrim, Dante from Devil May Cry, and Shantae’s titular character. Three of these new additions are sword fighters; only Shantae is a brawler. No new Mii gunners were added to the roster. Dante and Shantae were both highly desired picks for full-fledged fighters within the Smash community, whereas Lloyd was a genuine surprise. Skyrim is a massively popular game, so its inclusion in Smash was arguably inevitable.

The four new Mii fighters are launching alongside the new Smash fighter, Tekken’s Kazuya Mishima. The franchises represented by the new Mii fighter announcement all have a game represented on the Switch, and many have more than one. So, it’s worth digging into their respective backgrounds.

Smash Bros.: Who Are Dante, Shantae, Lloyd, and the Dragonborn?

Lloyd Irving is the main protagonist of Tales of Symphonia, a JPRG from Bandai Namco. The Tales of Symphonia games currently aren’t available on Switch, although they’re popular entries in the series. Lloyd’s inclusion could hint at a remastered Tales of Symphonia release for the Switch.

Dante is the main playable character of Capcom’s seminal hack-and-slash series, Devil May Cry. The franchise originally began production as a Resident Evil game, but has blossomed into its own beloved series, where Dante hunts demons who threaten Earth’s safety. There are five Devil May Cry games, but only the first three are on the Switch.

Shantae is a half-genie and titular character who protects her homeland, Sequin Land, from threats like her nemesis, the pirate Risky Boots. Shantae is a series of platformers from WayForward which, like Tales of Symphonia and Devil May Cry, began in the early 2000s. All five Shantae games are available on the Nintendo eShop, the most recent of which is the delightful Shantae and the Seven Sirens.

The Dragonborn hails from Bethesda’s open-world fantasy phenomenon Skyrim. Dragonborn are central to Skyrim’s plot and supplied the name for the game’s final DLC. Dragonborn have a mortal’s body, but the blood and soul of a Dragon. Dragons themselves are nearly extinct, and the player character is revealed to be the Last Dragonborn. Skyrim has been ported to the Switch, which may be why it’s been added to Smash Bros.

With these four Mii Fighters now announced, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has only one more DLC up its sleeve. While Shantae and Dante may be particular disappointments for many in the Smash community, since this means they likely won’t become fighters themselves, there is just a tiny opening left for legions of beloved characters to squish through. It’s arguably better for these four to be Mii Fighters than not in the game at all. These Mii Fighters release alongside Kazuya on June 29, 2021.
