The early critical response for The New Mutants is worse than X-Men: Dark Phoenix. 20th Century Fox launched its X-Men franchise 20 years ago and New Mutants is the final entry in an uneven saga. While the main franchise came to a disappointing end in 2019 with Dark Phoenix, some of Fox’s greatest success with adapting Marvel’s mutant characters came by exploring different genres and styles. Deadpool went full action-comedy with a hard R rating, while Logan put Hugh Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine in an R-rated western.

When New Mutants was announced several years ago, the idea was for the film to kick off a new low-budget horror franchise under the X-Men umbrella. Director Josh Boone had plans for the New Mutants to carry a trilogy, but the first film had a troubled production. Fox wanted to reshoot most of the movie but the project was pushed to the side as the Disney-Fox acquisition took place. Once the dust settled on the deal, Boone finished the movie without any reshoots.

After multiple delays, New Mutants is now out in theaters that are open throughout the country. Disney didn’t screen the movie for critics beforehand, but reviewers who decided to go see it in theaters are now starting to publish their thoughts on the film. So far, the early reviews for New Mutants are among the lowest for the franchise. Here are some excerpts of what critics are saying:

Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where Boone goes wrong, because there are just so many options to choose from.

Jordan Mintzer, THR

Generic and, at its best, straining to be heartfelt, director Josh Boone’s adaptation of the Marvel spin-off comic series is a Marvel movie spinoff in its own right, making vague references to the X-Men franchise but attempting to stand on its own.

There are also messy parts of The New Mutants. It starts very small and can’t quite bear the weight of its ending. In addition, some of the cinematography and visual effects felt more of the CW variety than a major superhero property. Nevertheless, I still had a good time watching this film!

Brian Orndorf, BluRay.com

A plodding viewing experience, even with lowered expectations. It’s a better fit for television, as Boone is making a network pilot, not a big screen experience.

A movie from a bygone era when Fox was its own company that didn’t quite know what to do with X-Men movies.

Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk Critics

But those going in expecting a complete disaster given the circumstances, and unceremonious dumping by Disney in the midst of a pandemic, will find that it’s at least a serviceable superhero horror story that might’ve led to an envelope-pushing franchise if things had gone another way.

Hope Madden, Columbus Underground

It doesn’t really work as an angsty romance, misses the mark as a horror movie and never for a minute feels like a superhero flick.

If you ever wanted The Breakfast Club as a horror film set in the X-Men universe, you now have it. It may not fully live up to the potential of that sentence, but I had a good time with it.

Due to how early in the review process New Mutants is, the collective critical response will likely continue to fluctuate. At this point, there are only twelve reviews published on Rotten Tomatoes, which is almost nothing compared to the 368 harsh reviews Dark Phoenix has. As more reviews for New Mutants continue to be published, how the critical consensus changes will be fascinating to see. Of the twelve reviews so far, only three received “fresh” ratings and none of them are glowing.

Barring a drastic swing in the tone of New Mutants’ reviews, the film appears to be destined to end the X-Men franchise on a bad note. The critical reception is one thing, but the movie is also almost guaranteed to not turn a profit. Even with a smaller budget (reportedly $80 million), it would be shocking if the film made the $160-240M needed to become profitable. The current estimates for the film’s opening weekend have New Mutants making $10M at the most, and that could be tougher to hit with its poor critical reception.
