Production on the Pokémon anime has been halted due to the COVID-19 crisis, and it’s unclear when the show will resume.

The seventh iteration of the Pokémon anime is currently being broadcast in Japan under the Pocket Monsters name. Ash Ketchum is taking part in the Pokémon World Championships, which involves traveling to every region from the video games and taking on the most powerful challengers to increase his rank. He is joined by a boy named Go, who is trying to catch all of the Pokémon in the world.

It seems that the Pokémon anime will be going on a temporary hiatus. According to a post on the Anime Pokémon Official Twitter page (translated by the Anime News Network), production on new episodes has been stopped due to the COVID-19 crisis and reruns will be aired for the foreseeable future. It’s unclear when production on new episodes will resume, but the state of national crisis in Japan has been extended to early May, so it won’t be for at least another few weeks.

The Pokémon anime has been incredibly interesting lately, as it’s starting to feel as if Ash Ketchum is going on one final adventure. Ash is currently assembling a team of incredibly powerful Pokémon, as he wants to be the one to take down Leon from the Galar region. It’s likely frustrating for longtime Pokémon fans to have to wait to see the resolution of these new developments, but the safety of the anime staff is paramount and it’s the right decision to delay the series.

The Pokémon anime has gone on hiatus in the past, with the most infamous being the four-month delay after the airing of the Porygon episode, which caused kids in Japan to have seizures. There is no telling when the COVID-19 lockdown is going to end and it’s unclear when Ash and Go’s adventures will resume, but their Pokémon journey isn’t going anywhere and the safety of real human beings is paramount.
