New Pokemon GO Region Exclusive Found

Earlier this month, Pokemon GO developer Niantic added several new Gen 3 Ice and Water-type Pokemon to the game. While players were initially delighted with this, many are now disheartened to learn that one of the rarest Gen 3 characters may actually be a region exclusive.

Since Niantic added the Gen 3 Ice and Water-types to the game, Pokemon GO players have complained that they have been unable to catch (Water and Rock-type Pokemon) Relicanth. Members of Pokemon GO subreddit TheSilphRoad have now uncovered evidence that Relicanth is actually a region exclusive and this is why so many players around the world are having trouble finding it.

So far, Relicanth has only been spotted in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands of Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia, leading some players to suggest that this is the only place the Pokemon is available.

These countries are some of the least populated territories in the world and they have a combined population of approximately five and a half million people. It means that few Pokemon GO players will have a Relicanth in their collections. Players outside of the region are already planning trips to catch the Pokemon in order to be part of this exclusive club.

Fans say that it is an unusual decision by Niantic to make Relicanth available for so few people. This is also why disappointed Pokemon GO players from outside of the Relicanth-spawning regions are hopeful that the character isn’t a region exclusive at all. Many have their fingers crossed that Relicanth will turn out to be a ‘migrating Pokemon’ that will just move to a different location every few weeks or so. Niantic tried a similar thing with the migrating the legendary dog trio from continent to continent over several months.

But a full migrating Pokemon feature seems unlikely right now given that Niantic has only just rolled out the dynamic weather system and the new Gen 3 characters. Introducing a migration system on top of that would likely be too much for the developer to handle, especially as Niantic is still ironing out the kinks in the game’s pre-existing features.

But a migration feature certainly would be interesting and would give players more of an excuse to play the game, coming back to it daily to catch new characters. It would also let players get Relicanth without players having to plan a vacation, so fingers crossed.

Pokemon GO is available now for Android and iOS devices.
