Pokémon fans have had the opportunity to revisit their childhoods since New Pokémon Snap released, and although the Nintendo Switch game contains plenty of callbacks to the original Nintendo 64 game, there are more than a few new surprises to enjoy.

Although some of the Pokémon in the game are fairly straightforward to photograph, others are more difficult to find. Fortunately, with a little help from Todd and Professor Mirror, players can track down these 10 hidden Pokémon and snap some quality shots.

10 Mew: Quick, Look Behind You!

With so much to take in on the path ahead, it’s not often New Pokémon Snap players will find themselves looking back — especially at the beginning of a level. However, the only way to unlock Mew is by turning around and playing music as soon as the Founja Jungle Night stage begins. For those who have reached Level 2, a pink ball of light will appear, and players will need to hit it with a Fluffruit to awaken the Legendary Pokémon.

This, of course, is a nod to the original Pokémon Snap, which featured Mew in its final stage. In the original, Mew also appeared as an orb, and players had to follow similar steps to snag a clear shot of it.

9 Vivillon: Hidden In The Jungle

Generally, Vivillon aren’t all that difficult to locate in New Pokémon Snap. They appear during multiple stages throughout the game, and players will get their first glimpse of the Bug-type Pokémon during the very first level of Florio Island. However, several different patterns can be captured and they aren’t all as easy to find as the Meadow Pattern Vivillon that appear at the beginning of the game.

Perhaps the hardest Vivillon to find are located in the Founja Jungle. The Monsoon Pattern can be unlocked by taking the first alternate path during Level 2. When two Aipom run across the path, hitting on with an Illumina Orb will cause it to cut the grass to the left and reveal several Monsoon Pattern Vivillon hiding there.

8 Swampert: Sleeping Through The Action

Those wondering how to get a close-up of Swampert during the Founja Jungle stage will need to unlock an alternate path that takes them behind the waterfall at the end, revealing several Pokémon hidden back there. Two sleeping Swampert are among them, and they offer players the best opportunity to capture a high-quality image of this Water-type Pokémon.

Players who venture on the earlier alternate path will also get the chance to encounter Swampert by using a Fluffruit to lure Leafeon down that path, then playing music so the nearby Ariados drop down and scare it. This will result in an encounter between the underwater Swampert and Leafeon, one that counts as a four-star photo for both of them.

7 Lugia: A Reward For Saving Lanturn

Gone are the days where Mew was the only Legendary in Pokémon Snap, and that means players are going to have to work to unlock several iconic Pokémon as they run through the game. Lugia is one of them, but finding it won’t be possible without beating the game first.

Once players have run through the main campaign, they’ll need to unlock the two hidden paths located in the Lental Seafloor stage. The first is the Undersea path, which can be activated by throwing an Illumina Orb at the Clawitzer at the beginning of the level. From there, players will eventually come across a Lanturn, which they’ll also need to hit with an Illumina Orb. Doing so will cause Lanturn to swim downward and get kidnapped by a pair of Frillish. Hitting it a second time will free it from their clutches, allowing it to swim to and open the alternate path that leads to Lugia.

6 Ho-Oh: Follow The Feathers

That’s right, Lugia isn’t the only Legendary bird that appears in New Pokémon Snap. Ho-Oh can also be found and photographed during Level 2 of the Fireflow Volcano stage, though it takes a combination of luck and quick thinking to snap a quality shot. Players’ first encounter with Ho-Oh will be entirely by chance. Look to the sky at the beginning of the stage, and there’s a chance the Pokémon will fly by. If it does, photographing it will cause it to appear again later on. (If Ho-Oh doesn’t show up, restarting the stage can prompt its arrival.)

Once players have snapped a shot of Ho-Oh at the beginning, it will appear at other points throughout the Fireflow Volcano (more on that here). To get a close-up shot of the Legendary bird, however, players will need to locate and interact with three feathers spread throughout the stage. Doing so will cause Ho-Oh to appear at the very end, close enough to snag a platinum photo.

5 Kecleon: Blending With The Branches

Kecleon can be found during the Elsewhere Forest stage, but spotting it can prove a difficult task. True to this Pokémon’s nature, it blends in with its surroundings and will be invisible unless players hit it with an Illumina Orb.

Of course, spotting Kecleon in the first place is the most challenging part, but scanning the area will reveal where these Pokémon are hidden. From there, players can catch them in a number of different poses, including while they’re asleep.

4 Alolan Sandslash: Hidden In The Snow

Alolan Sandslash can be found in several places during the Shiver Snowfields Day stage, but it can be easy to miss for players who don’t know where to look. The first one appears at the very beginning, but with so much else going on, players may not notice it. The Sandslash will appear on one of the cliffs on the left, and those who photograph it both times it shows up will unlock a hidden path with all kinds of interesting Pokémon.

Two more Sandslash can be found later on, when players travel up the slope and come across the group of Swinub and Mamoswine. Those who look closely at the ground will notice icy spikes protruding from the snow. Hitting them with an apple will cause Sandslash to emerge, and those who act quickly enough will be able to snag a shot of it in the air.

3 Suicune: A Speedy Encounter

Suicune is the only Legendary dog currently in New Pokémon Snap, and players need to unlock both alternate paths during the Shiver Snowfields stage to locate it. Once they’ve reached the final portion of this course during Night (Level 2), they’ll see a Jinx riding an Avalugg across the icy water.

Hitting this Jinx with an Illumina Orb will prompt Suicune to run by, though the Legendary Pokémon moves quickly and players will want to stay alert to capture it.

2 Jolteon: Find It In The Foliage

Each of Eevee’s evolutions can be found in New Pokémon Snap, but Jolteon is the most difficult to come across. Located in Outaway Cave, the Electric-type Pokémon can be found once players have beaten the game’s main campaign and unlocked both alternate paths hidden within this stage.

After players have unlocked the second alternate path, which gives them an opportunity to snap a photo of Diancie, they’ll be taken into a cavern where Jolteon is hiding beneath foliage below. Luring it out to take a photo can prove a challenge, but that’s what Fluffruit are for!

1 Manaphy: Dance, Dance

Once players have beaten the game, they can find the Legendary Pokémon Manaphy in the Maricopia Reef Evening stage — but they’ll need to do some work to draw it out. There are two ways to locate Manaphy. The first requires players to throw Illumina Orbs at the Crystabloom Flowers early in the stage. Once they’ve done this, Manaphy should appear near the Wailord near the halfway point. Playing music will prompt it to dance.

The other way to find Manaphy is to hit the four Lapras at the end of the stage with Illumina Orbs and play music. The Legendary Pokémon will show up and start dancing, offering an opportunity to snap a quality photo.
