One of the most beloved spin-offs in Nintendo’s Pokemon franchise is the peculiar 1999 Nintendo 64 title Pokemon Snap. The original game saw players taking the role of Todd Snap, a Pokemon photographer, after he is summoned by Professor Oak to Pokemon Island and tasked with taking photographs of all of the wild Pokemon inhabiting the island. The game went down as a cult classic, as it was one of the first spin-offs the franchise saw after the monumental successes of Pokemon Red and Blue on the Game Boy in 1996, however, the game has never received any sort of follow-up in the 21 years since its release.

Finally, fans can look forward to a new title in the beloved spin-off series as Nintendo has announced a new project titled “New Pokemon Snap” for Nintendo Switch along with a brief gameplay teaser. The title was announced during the “Pokemon Presents” presentation earlier today and the game is being developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, who previously collaborated with Nintendo on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the original version of Metroid Prime 4 before the project was rebooted. The game features improved visuals from the previous titles developed by Game Freak, Pokemon Sword and Shield, it also features Pokemon spanning all eight generations of the franchise.

From the brief teaser, gameplay seems to be quite similar to the Nintendo 64 original. It will be a first-person, on-rail title featuring levels where the player uses their camera to take photographs of each different type of Pokemon. In the original, players were rewarded for capturing images of certain creatures or poses, while also using a plethora of items to catch their attention. The description on Nintendo’s website touts that the title “brings the gameplay of the 1999 Pokemon Snap game for the Nintendo 64 system to life on the Nintendo Switch system with unknown islands to discover and different Pokemon to see,” alluding to the fact that the game may recreate locations from the original Nintendo 64 game.

While many fans were previously disappointed that Nintendo and Game Freak failed to make use of the Wii U’s unique tablet-like controller for some sort of Pokemon Snap remake, the Nintendo Switch also seems like the perfect platform for an immersive new Pokemon Snap title, thanks to the unique features of the Joy-Con and the gyroscopic controls found in other first-person titles such as Doom and Metro Redux. It is unknown when the title will launch and if it will be a full release or a budget title.

New Pokemon Snap is currently in development, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
