A new trailer has dropped for New Pokemon Snap, and while it is currently only in Japanese, it offers an overview of the game and its systems. The trailer also confirms even more Pokemon that players will find around the Lental region when the game launches.

New Pokemon Snap is a follow-up to the original Pokemon Snap, a fan-favorite game that was released over twenty years ago on the Nintendo 64. Instead of being focused on combat and battling like the main series Pokemon games, Pokemon Snap allowed players to see Pokemon in their habitats and how they interact with their environments and other Pokemon.

The trailer is split into different sections, highlighting different aspects of the games, and while it is narrated in Japanese, it is still possible to grasp each section’s point. The first section re-introduces the main cast of characters like Professor Mirror and his assistant Rita. The trailer then shows the tools available to the player, including the new Illumina Orbs, which causes Pokemon to glow and have different interactions. This section of the trailer ends with another shot of a Pidgeot hunting a Magikarp.

The next section of the trailer focuses on route options where players reach a point in a level and can choose between two paths forward, something new to New Pokemon Snap. Depending on which path the player chooses, the rest of the level will feature different Pokemon. The original Pokemon Snap had secret exits at the end of some levels, but before finding them, the level still played out the same way every time. Each level having multiple paths is great for replayability, and it might also be the key to finding the Illumina Pokemon, which players will be researching for Professor Mirror.

The rest of the trailer shows how the player’s photos are graded by the Professor and some extensive options to edit and customize pictures. A previous trailer revealed that players could also post their pictures to an online service, where others can see and rate them, and this process is shown briefly at the end of the trailer. This feature will hopefully see a community form around the game, as is common around Nintendo games. For those not interested in the service, photos can be downloaded and shared on other social networks.

Fans have been waiting for a new Pokemon Snap game for years, and so far, New Pokemon Snap seems to be living up to expectation. Though, as is often the case with long-awaited video games, players won’t know if the game is worth the wait until it is released, but so far, things look promising.

New Pokemon Snap releases exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on April 30th, 2021.
