After over two decades of waiting, New Pokémon Snap is almost here at last, and the reviews are in. By almost all accounts, the long wait was well worth it, as the Nintendo Switch exclusive has made a strong early impression. Although Pokémon has is traditionally a JRPG series about making monsters battle each other, the on-rails photography premise of the original Pokémon Snap has always been a beloved take on the universe that fans have requested for a very long time.
Although it has been ages since the last Pokémon Snap, which came out all the way back in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, there were attempts to make a new Pokémon Snap over the years. Due to changing technology and other variable factors, the sequel never got off the ground until the Switch era. With the upcoming April 30 release of New Pokémon Snap, fans can learn much more about the various behaviors, personalities, and other attributes of Pokémon in the all-new Lental region.
As of right now, New Pokémon Snap sits at a respectable score of 80 on Metacritic, with many top outlets giving it high praise. Though it’s not a perfect experience, and having some slightly annoying flaws like an arbitrary grading system and tutorials that seem to drag the game down a bit. Looking at the big picture, though the pros seem to greatly outweigh the cons and fans should be excited about New Pokémon Snap.

Critics are consistently praising the game for its charming, relaxed tone and its ability to make the Pokémon world feel more authentic and fleshed out. With New Pokémon Snap offering more depth to its photographable monsters, it’ll be interesting for players to discover every little quirk regarding the lifeforms fans thought they already knew so much about.
Given the intensely long wait since the original game, it’s great to hear that Nintendo and Bandai Namco managed to deliver a game worthy of the Pokémon Snap name. Whether or not more games in the series can be expected after this likely depends on how well the game sells, but the original game has built up such a strong fandom over the years that it’s hard to imagine New Pokémon Snap disappointing in the sales department.
