New Pokémon Snap takes place in the Lental region, an archipelago made up of 6 different islands for the player to explore. The goal of the game is to snap photos of wild Pokémon, as the player takes on the role of Pokémon researcher and rides around in the NEO-ONE. On the surface, New Pokémon Snap seems like it might be somewhat shallow, a fun relaxing game, but lacking depth. However, the storyline and lore introduced for this latest Pokémon title feel rich and just as heartwarming as a Pokémon game should.

At the heart of the plot for New Pokémon Snap is of course the player (without whom the Illumina Pokémon wouldn’t have made themselves visible!), but it is lead by Professor Mirror. He is the head of the research team for the Lental region, who are studying what the professor calls the Illumina Phenomenon and the Pokémon that go along with it. The phenomenon was first officially documented by Professor Mirror, though he believes that the famous explorer Captain Vince first photographed the Pokémon, not really knowing what they were.
Captain Vince is a legendary researcher who, 100 years prior to present day New Pokémon Snap, embarked on an ecological survey of the entire Lental region. Though he was only a child the first time he encountered the Illumina Pokémon, Captain Vince would eventually publish the oldest photographs of the fabled, glowing Pokémon, but those photographs’ legitimacy would be heavily debated. There are legends that tell of these powerful, patterned Pokémon, but no one has been able to prove their existence.
New Pokémon Snap: Are Lental’s Legends True?
There are ancient Lental legends that tell the story of six powerful Pokémon protecting the region from a huge disaster, but how or what the disaster was, no one knows. Professor Mirror, however, has a theory. 2,000 years before the events of New Pokémon Snap, there was a meteorite, now known as the Tellur Meteorite, that supposedly impacted a wide area and caused massive amounts of damage. But in all of the ecological surveying that has been done of the area, no one has found any evidence of this damage.
Captain Vince, beholden to the technology of his time, wasn’t able to fully explore Lental. Now, with the NEO-ONE having the capabilities to travel underwater, through caves, and even over lava, the research team is able to discover a missing piece of the puzzle. Toward the end of New Pokémon Snap, the player travels to an underground cave which is giving off readings that suggest there is a human-made structure there. In this cave is where a mural is found that depicts the true events of the Tellur Meteorite, showing how six powerful Pokémon banded together to form a barrier that shielded the entire region and protected it from the attack.
Though the people of Lental didn’t know what exactly the Pokémon were protecting the region from, they were right in that there was a disaster and the Illumina Pokémon protected Lental from it. At the end of the game, the player gets to meet Xerneas, who turns out to be the Illumina Pokémon that called all the others together to protect the region. This legendary Pokémon consumed so much of its energy to protect Lental that it has been sleeping ever since. In the very last scene of New Pokémon Snap, it is revealed that the Illumina Pokémon are drawn to the player because “Pokémon can really tell when someone loves them.”
