Stern Pinball has announced that their newest table will be based on Stranger Things, and it looks like it might be the perfect addition for pinball fans and those who love the show. The nostalgia factor is strong here since pinball brings back memories of the 1980s when the show also takes place, and its color scheme looks great with hints of vaporwave.

Like most of Stern’s modern offerings, the Stranger Things game will be available in either Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition, and have an MSRP of between $6,000-10,000. The differences between these models are largely aesthetic, with the Limited-Edition models often larger and with more complex displays and better sound quality. In this case, both the Premium and Limited Editions will have a video projector that shows images and animations right on the board, which allows for real-time gameplay interaction.

The addition of the projection display is a fascinating innovation that is a glimpse into the future of most the development of physical tables, because what is does is attempt to bridge the gap between real pinball tables and video games reproductions, for example, as seen with Pinball FX 3 for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Pinball FX 3 offers realistic physics in its pinball games but also uses the video game platform to add in thematic elements that one can interact with on the play field. Since it is all animated, it is not possible to do the same thing with traditional pinball tables, but with a projector the same goal is accomplished. Star Wars Pinball is a great example of this, with almost every table featuring characters from the Star Wars universe animated to interact with the board in some way.

Stern Pinball tables, like many modern-day machines from most manufacturers, allow for software updates for their games, often to patch problems or bugs, but the potential also exists to benefit these kinds of projectors. Imagine buying a Stranger Things table and having updates add new content through a software update. This would certainly add tremendous value to a table, and it would be fascinating to see if this is the direction that home pinball tables take as this technology becomes more common in future tables.

Even without a projector, the table looks quite solid as a homage to Seasons 1 and 2 of the show. It features the main cast looking younger in some of the images, then older alongside new characters that appeared later, like Bob and Linnea. There are several quests to complete by hitting three distinct quest markers, and ultimately one can face off against the Demogorgon head once revealed at the top center of the play field.

The table looks fantastic with its colors and gameplay, and this writer needs to track one down and see how hard it is to defeat the Demogorgon.
