New ‘The Wolverine’ Image and Poster; Director Says ‘Our Movie Stands Alone’

The next major superhero movie of 2013 is The Wolverine, featuring Hugh Jackman in his sixth appearance as the adamantium-clawed Logan (assuming you count his cameo in X-Men: First Class). Just over a month remains until Wolvie’s trip to Japan begins showing in theaters, so it’s safe to assume that we’ll see Fox kick the marketing up a notch in the near future.
Today, we have some new material focused on a couple of the ladies in Logan’s life – one alive, one deceased – in addition to new quotes from Wolverine director James Mangold, discussing the film’s (lack of) connection to other X-Men movies, future and past (sorry, couldn’t resist).
The Wolverine picks up some time after the events in X-Men: The Last Stand, with a scruffier-than-usual Logan – who’s abandoned the remaining X-Men, in order to wander the Earth alone – dwelling on the “curse” that is his immortality and painful memories of his dead love Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Everything changes once a mysterious and deadly woman named Yukio (Rila Fukushima) tracks Wolvie down, in order to whisk him away on a visit to Japan that will forever change the mutant with the metal claws.

Meanwhile, Collider has premiered the latest in a series of sumi-e ink character posters for The Wolverine, as designed by Fox’s Chief Creative Officer Tony Sella. Logan and Yukio previously got their own one-sheets – in addition to the villains Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova) and Silver Samurai – so, it’s only fitting that Jean Grey should likewise get her own stylish poster in that artistic style (with the use of blood red as a not-so-subtle reference to her being deceased).

Lastly, despite the carryover of certain plot elements (specifically, Jean’s death) from The Last Stand, Mangold says that The Wolverine should be viewed as a standalone addition to the X-Men movie universe. In other words, we have bad news for those who’ve been hoping to see Mangold’s comic book film tie-in directly and pave the way for developments in director Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past (which arrives in theaters next year).
Here is the quote from Mangold, during an interview with SFX:
“Bryan and I have talked and he’s seen what we’ve done. Clearly the reality is that we are all trying to work together and make things groove together. But the trick is we were making our movie before Bryan came on and before I knew what they were up to in that film. Our agenda was always our agenda and our movie stands alone, so the journey we take Logan on in The Wolverine, we bring to a close.”
Mangold told our Rob Keyes something similar, during an interview conducted on the Wolverine set. Here is what the filmmaker had to say back then, when asked if there was any pressure to “somehow interweave or set up something” in the greater X-Men cinematic universe (in case you missed it):
“I mean, all these things exist in the world around me, and friends of mine and people are working on them. But the fact is that, no, the simple answer is no. I mean, we’ve been underway and kind of producing our saga and getting our script solid for the last two years. I mean, what’s happening with the other [X-Men] pictures is still in play and kind of we’re way ahead of them by a year or two. So, our focus has been entirely on making this the very best Wolverine movie we could.”
