New World Russian Localization Stopped Following Ukraine Invasion

The world has been watching in horror at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with leaders around the globe condemning Putin’s actions, while those in the business world have also expressed their disapproval with companies such as Microsoft and Apple stating that they are stopping their services and sales of their products in Russia.

Games companies have been a part of this, with the likes of CD Projekt, Nintendo, Rockstar, Bloober, Sega, and Xbox, among others, having announced they’re stopping sales in Russia. These actions can help to put pressure on Putin as the Russian people living under his authoritarian regime may grow increasingly disapproving with his leadership as these boycotts and other sanctions bite. One of the latest companies to join this growing list is Amazon Games.

Amazon Games has said it’s putting its plans for a Russian localisation of its MMO New World on hold due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Talking to TechRadar, Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann said: “We were looking into localising New World for Russia, and we stopped that”. A spokesperson later confirmed that this was because of Russian’s invasion of Ukraine. While the Russian localisation is on pause, it seems the game is still available to play in the country, however. Amazon has pledged to match employee donations made to relief organisations serving Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Vice President Mykhailo Fedorov said several days ago that game developers should “temporarily block all Russian and Belorussian accounts, temporarily stop the participation of Russian and Belorussian teams and gamers in all international esports events, and cancel all international events holding on the territory of Russia and Belarus”. In a Tweet, that accompanied the post of his statement, Fedorov tagged Xbox and PlayStation.

Other games companies have expressed their support for Ukraine by fundraising and donating. The Pokemon Company has promised to donate $200,000 to help victims of war in Ukraine. This War of Mine developer 11 Bit Studios has raised over half a million pounds for the country and is still pledging support. The co-founder of id Software, the famed Doom designer John Romero, is creating a brand-new level for Doom 2 to raise funds to help Ukraine.

As Russia continues its actions in Ukraine, sanctions and economic repercussions are likely to build, and the video games industry is playing its part.
